Hi, I am new to dial in access so treat me as an idiot
    please  .

I have a Win2000 DC with RAS enabled also acting as DHCP
server. Also have an NT mailserver with RAS enabled. The
modem is connected to the mail server.

Users can dial in and access the mailserver, they are
issued IP information by the DC and they can ping host
names across the network. This allows users to access
mail and other IP related packages.

But for the life of me I cannot get the users to access
their shared directories! This means that when they log
in if they have roaming profiles they will not load up,
also they cannot access their files on the shares.

The allow access dial in properties on the DC is set to
Grant remote access permissions. But I still cannot
    access shared areas.

    *** Some more information *****

If I use the ip address instead of the hostname I can access the shared areas, so:

    Net use \\ip address\sharename Works
    Net use \\hostname\sharename Doesnt

Any help, advice or articles would be greatfully recieved.

    Thankyou in advance.

Not an answer - sorry. But a few questions.

You say they can ping host names across the network. Does this mean a ping by name works but connecting to a share by name doesn't?

Was the net use information because you connect them by a net use command or just by way of information?

Are the dial-up users connecting to a share on a server with a fixed IP address? If that is the case you could always use hosts or lmhosts on the PCs that will be doing RAS and not even worry why it isn't working properly since it would work then.

    Ah, my typo, apologies.

They can ping the hostname of the Mailserver, but cannot ping the hostname of the Domain Controller. Yet they can ping the IP address of the Domain Controller.

The Mailserver is NT4 and the DC is 2000 server, its the Mailserver that has the modem connection to the Dial in machine. The DC is also supplying the dial in machine DHCP so that the DNS settings of the dial in machine are pointing to the DC as its primary DNS machine.

Mindyou, even though the dial in machine can see the hostname of the mailserver, it does not see any machines across the Microsoft Windows Network when looked at in explorer.

Thanks for answering. Sorry about the confusion.

I have the feeling you are missing something simple here. I am missing it as well. Frustrating when things partly work.

What operating system(s) for your dial-in users?

What security event log entries on the RAS server when they connect?

Does an ipconfig /all on a PC connected via RAS look normal?

Does placing a hosts or lmhosts file (with all servers listed) on the dial-in machine fix the problem?

Check to see if the workgroup name on the client is the same as domain name. They must match to browse the network.

The operating system for the dialin users is Windows 2000 pro. The Mailserver that has the Modem is Windows NT and the Domain Controller is Windows 2000 Server pro. The other servers are mixed NT and 2000.

The security log for the mailserver shows no events, but the system log show successfull authentication of the dialin user.

Ipconfig /all shows the dhcp settings that I should be expecting to see. All the settings are correct with Ipconfig.

Havent tried the LMhosts file yet, will set that up and report back.

The domain name is correct as the computer will attatch correctly when networked to the LAN.

    Cheers

More and more strange. Everything sounds good and like it should be working. Hopefully LMHosts will make it do as it should and you can just not worry why it wasn't.

When the remote users log in, are they using the dial-in check box on the logon window so they are connected from the start or do they log on locally and connect later?

Thanks very much for your time and replys. You where right it was down to the hosts file.

When I looked in the file I found that it had the name of one server all ready in it, but not the DC server. When I entered this and dialled in, I got the lot, profiles, shares and ping reply's

    Thanks again.
