Can someone please explain to me if possible why is it that a Win98 machine which is setup to static IP address finds the server for about two days and then it cannot find the server after that.
The Win98 machine is networked to a XP pro machine which used cable modem to connect.
The XP Pro machine has a local area connection icon with settings:
    IP address: 192.168.0.t
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
    Preffered DNS server: 24.153.22.67
and has client for MS,NetBeui,TCP/IP,File and printer sharing installed as well.

While the 98se machine has settings:
    IP address: 192.168.0.x
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.1
    DNS Server: 24.153.22.67

These settings have worked for me for about two days and then it just can't find server each time after. I cannot seemed to understand why it cannot find the server or the cause for it to loose connection with the server, forgive me I'm just a beginner to this stuff.

    Thanks in advance.

As I did more research I think what the problem is it cannot find the DNS server because on IE on the top bar it has message "Cannot Find server" and on the lower right hand bar it has message "C:\Windows\System\...\ DNS ERROR "

How do you correct a DNS ERROR?

    ACTUALLY
I took my friends labtop and hooked it to the network instead of the 98se machine, and it's having the same problem cannot find a connection. The labtop runs XP Pro and when I checked its local connection icon it is set to assign IP address automatically. I opened up IE and got that same message "Cannot find Server ".
Then I performed a "ping www.google.com" and "ping www.yahoo.com" on the labtop and returns "request timed out ". I opened IE and took the IP addresses of the above two sites and entered it in IE address bar and it does CONNECT to the sites using only there IP addresses NOT their Domain Names. And that is my problem with my 98SE machine as well, How do I correct a problem such as this(which only connects through an IP address).

Are you connecting thru a router? If that's the case you don't need to have anything filled in for the DNS server address and that may be causing the problem.

Another possibility, on the 98 machine look for a file in the Windows directory named Hosts and another named Lmhosts, neither will have a file extention, and rename them. Leave the hosts.sam and lmhosts.sam files alone, they are just samples to show how to use the hosts and lmhosts files.

On the other hand if you're using ICS, then I don't have a clue.

    IPconfig means IBconfused

    Greetings ridak,

When you connected the friends 'labtop' to the network, did you use the great and all powerful IPconfig command at the command prompt? Syn: "ipconfig /all" This will show you(and us) what the machine is using for it's addresses at the time of the error. Type in "ipconfig" to see all available switches. To correct the issue I wood imagine you need to refresh the IP address of the guest PC the XP box should hand out a fresh IPaddress to it.
Win98 uses "winipcfg" from the run box to do the same thing. go to Start >Run then type in "winipcfg" to view the simple settings then click more info for the rest. Let me know what you find.

Hi, thanks for the replies guys. What I did was throw the HUB out of the way, and bought a Router. I guess what I was trying to do with the HUB was to get some sort of DHCP management which of-course the HUB does have the capability to do that(My Hub). Since my cable modem is assigned one IP address by the ISP and I don't want to buy a second IP for sure, then for me to share a single IP in multiple computers my easy route would be get a Router that is capable of doing what I wanted to do. I know you can still manage a single IP with multiple pc's using some sort of PROXY softaware but I didn't want to do that. SO FAR THINGS ARE GOING SMOOTH WITH THE ROUTER, EXCEPT THE 98 MACHINE STILL HAS DNS ERROR IT POINTS TO A FILE LOCATED IN c:\windows\system\shodccs.dll\dnserror.

Sounds like a great solution. On the 98 machine, make sure you have changed the IP to use DHCP instead of a static. Then all of the www connectivity info like gateway, DNS, will come from your new router. That should chase that DNS error away.
