Is there some way to set the "view" for either "small icons" or "details" as a default for viewing all folders? I never use the large icons, and am constantly having to reset the view each time I open a folder.

Sometimes when set the view function for "small icon" or "detail," the program seems to remember it for a while, but sometimes (dunno why) it reverts to the large icons. Drives me nuts.

I am sure there is an embarrassingly easy way to set the view default for all folders, but I'm sure stumped.

I assume you are talking about Windows explorer.
It often has problems remembering your preferred settings.
    Start Windows explorer.
    Choose the settings you want.
    Click the File tab.
    Press the Shift key.
    Exit Windows explorer.
    regards

    Folder options

    hey fuzzworth,

Kinda new to this BBS, here goes. In win98se under View>Folder options Click the view tab then about the sixed check box from the bottom you'll find "Remember each folder's view settings" among other mods you can make to folder views.

    Hope this helps

Still stumped (may be invincible ignorance). I can't seem to find a way to set the folder/file view universally for the small icon or the details preference.

If I visit a folder and set the view to, say, "details," it willl bring up the detail view next time I visit. But unless I visit every file and folder once in a while, they all seem to want to go back to those clumsy large icons, which means that I can see only a fraction of what is in a directory. It's easy enough to reset them, but when I am doing a lot of file moving or copying, it adds some tedious keystrokes to each operation, if I want to see the whole directory or folder contents.

Dunno if I "m making sense or asking the right questions, but I want to bid farewell to the large icons for all time (sounds pretty grandiose, eh?).

I have tried (although perhaps not fully understood) the suggestions from merlin and spaceman_spiff, to no avail. I can pull down the view tab, but when I get to folder options, I get the option of "classic" (i.e., large icons) web page design or "custom." Selecting "custom" gives a range of choices having nothing to do with the large/small/detail view.

And clicking on the file tab and hitting the shift key (or holding the shift key) does not seem to have any effect on anything.

    Arrggh.

Right click on my computer, select explore. Do not click on any subfolders. From that window, view, folder options, select web page, apply, then small icons, then click refresh. Then close out explorer window before going to any subfolders. Re-open explorer, and it should have stuck for all folders. Everyone here has said pretty much the same thing. I think you were doing it for subfolders. You want it for "my computer ".

    setting view defaults

Thanks for the directions on setting the view as default. I've got the main directories now set as small icons (actually, "list "), but subfolders keep showing up as large icons. Where do I go to get every folder and sub-folder in every directory to show up as "list" or "small icons" every time they are opened?

Any help will be appreciated. Maybe I gotta hold my mouth different.

Try setting one folder the way you want then go to 'View' > 'Folder options' then click the 'view' tab, then click the button 'like current folder' you be prompted for confirmation. That should do it. Or have you tried this before?

    Regards,
Spiff (saving the galaxy one byte at a time)

    Thanks, Spiff:

Yup, tried it already. Now the first tier of folders (I access then through a shortcut to "My Documents" on my desktop) is set to "list" as I wanted, but when I click on one of the folders, all the files are displayed as space-eating large icons.

When I go through the process you describe, I get, as you said, to the "like current folder" button; but the graphic that goes with that panel shows only a large icon. No toggle or key to get to "small icon," "list" or "details." I hoped that the "like current folder" switch would make them all mimic the highlighted folder, but I was wrong.

Still chapfallen and mystified, and starting to feel like Joe Btflsk,

Here's a nice combo shot to try: In the folder options view tab, clear the check box next to "remember each folder's view settings" click ok to apply then get back to it again and use the set all folder's button I mentioned earlier. then if you wish you can check the "remember box" and customize from there.
    Ain't all this technology grand?

Thanks again for the suggestion. Tried to work it that way, but still end up with large icons in most folders. I can go into each folder individually an change the view, and the view will generally "stick," but I was hoping to find one master stroke that would slay all the **** big icons.

All in all, it's no big deal, because I can just keep changing the view whenever it defaults back to the large icons. But it's a slight bit annoying. Ah well, I still have my healtttttttt..................[end of transmission]
