using Win 98 the modem cannot seem to get a dieal tone.
I am more familiar with cable broadband connections.
running Win 98 SE. Ordinary external rockwell 33.6 fax modem. Modem works and dials out with a Win95 computer.
have set up the connection repeatedly every way I can. No matter what cannot get a dial tone.
what setting am I missing ?
    thanks

I can only think that the modem drivers are compatible with Win95 but not Win98. That is odd indeed !
On the 98 PC, remove the modem (Control Panel/System)
reboot and choose a Windows driver approximating to the
    modem you have.
    regards

    no dialtone = modem death

    Hello again Schamish,
I've got to remember to have more coffee before reading posts. You've said that the modem works fine on a 95 box but won't grab a dial tone on a 98 box. Have you tried the flow control settings? In the Control panel under modems click the modem in question then click properties on the connection tab click advanced. Almost all of the external modems need the RTS/CTS flow control. Give it a try if the driver change doesn't work. I would like to know exactly what model you are using if possible.
    Hope this helps.
