After a month or more of trying to fix problems (see previous posts re. typing/scrolling delays), my last suggestion from HP is to run the Recovery CD that came with my computer. I am afraid to do this for many reasons. I have clear instructions from HP on how to do this, including a link to help me with backing up Outlook Express stuff...I am worried about losing my Address Book in Outlook Express, and saved emails...also reinstalling many programs we have now on our computer. BUT I want to fix the problem, so I will eventually try this when I get up the nerve. Any precautions (aside from creating backup disks first and being very careful) or suggestions? Anyone who's done this and has any words of wisdom for me? I am chicken, basically, and don't want to lose important stuff or ***** things up even further. They seem to think that since nothing has worked so far, that files/programs are corrupt somehow and need to be restored. Any thoughts are appreciated!!

I've only done one restore on an HP computer but it was relatively painless and pretty easy. As long as you backup everything of importance you shouldn't have any problems. You'll be back to the way it was when purchased, all of the useless programs that HP puts on there. The only thing that could be a problem is if you have different hardware than what came with the machine originally. If you have added new hardware to the machine you'd be better off removing it before doing the restore and putting it back after the restore is complete.

If you have any problems after the restore you can always come back here. Good luck. :D

    HP Recovery

    Hi drewbarbpi:

    Been there, done dat.

I have an HP Pavilion that is over 3 years old now. Had to do 3 Format and Recoveries the first year, but have since curbed my tendency for download fever.

The Format and Recovery is not difficult. My advice would be to save your Favorites in addition to what you mentioned. Also be prepared to reconfigure your ISP stuff after. Perhaps contact your ISP for technical info prior to proceeding so you will prepared for that part after the Recovery.

Dont forget to unplug your printer and other peripherals prior to proceeding with your Format and Recovery.

If you have further questions give me a holler.

    :D

Thanks, guys! I guess once I read over all the steps and talk to my ISP, and feel brave, I will go forward! I'll likely be back here soon to ask lots more stupid questions! Wonder how my computer became corrupted? The Mafia? Rap music? Violent movies? :)

    HP Recovery-- Scared

    drewbarbpi:

It is hard to say--perhaps you were like me at one time and had download fever?

After you get recovered I'd recommend you go to a place like www2whidbey.com and see how to remove a lot of the junk from your Startup ( including a lot of HP stuff they put in there ). Then perhaps get rid of Mcafee or Norton and install AVG Free Version.

Let us know how you make out.
