I got a new computer with XP on it and installed my HP1120c using the latest driver from the HP website. Now the special features such as 'ZoomSmart' are not available because the toolbox is not installed. Is there any way to get these special features back? There's no help for this problem at the HP website that I can find.

    Irv,

I'm not familiar with that HP, but I presume you have loaded any software suite that came with the printer? Drivers are generally just that.

Thanks for answering PeteC. I tried that but I get the error message 'The setup wizard is unable to modify the settings stored in the registry.' I'm logged on as the administrator (I'm the only person using the machine).

I checked the HP (UK) site, but could not find a driver for XP - where did you get it from?

Suggest you try the W2k or NT4 drivers.

That's what I did. The driver works fine but I can't install the toolkit with its special features because of that 'unable to modify registry' error. It's a biggie with this printer because it prints up to 13 x 19 inch paper and the special features are really necessary.

That looked like a great idea but it didn't work. I still get the same error message that it couldn't modify the settings stored in the registry. I tried it using all the different compatability settings and with and without the printer previously installed and even tried using the wizard with all settings. Any other ideas? I'm totally out of them.

Not really - it looks like the software is not compatible with XP.

    Only other suggestions are :

    Contact HP tech support

    Search on Google

    Good Luck!!

I did the google search and did come across one person who said she installed the hp1220 driver and it worked and restored the special features but when I tried it I just get the message that the computer can't communicate with the printer. It says it is unable to monitor LPT1 and also that my printer is offline or incapable of 2-way communication. Anyone have any more ideas? I'll try anything to keep from having to buy a new printer.

    Hi Irv

Not sure if this is doable in your situation. But if you still have the w98 computer, install (if not already) the HP printer and network the w98 with XP. Then assign the HP printer as a shared network printer. Now, I DO NOT know if the specific features you need are going to be accessable via the XP. If your need for 13 x 19 paper could be made as default setting to the printer, it should not matter. But all features should be available at the w98. Again, this is a lot of road for a work around.

Clutching at straws here - I wonder if you can run the driver, or if not the driver, at least the software, in Compatability mode ?

Right click on the *.exe file in Explorer and see if the Compatability mode tab is available - if it is try 98.

    Hi Irv
This is a stretch, but when I first hooked up my HP (R40) to my w95 4 years ago, I had to go into Bios and enable "ECP ", which allowed bi-directional communication at the parallel port. I don't know if you are using a USB connection, parallel port or if ECP feature is in your Bios. I believe this is the IEEE-1284 compliance.

I appreciate the thought but when I install it as an hp1120c it has bidirectional communication so it must be enabled already.
    Thanks anyway.

Also, I tried all the compatibility modes and none of them worked. Thanks.
