This situation is strange to say the least. When switching from dial-up to DSL I installed the driver for the on board NIC on my Dell dimension 8100. The first thing I noticed was that when I looked in the Network properties the adapter was there but no TCPIP(default for win98) so I tried to install TCPIP. I clicked "add" then I clicked on the protocol icon and clicked "add" on that window. The pointer flashed to an hourglass and then normal. I got no next window. NO NETWORK COMPONENTS WILL INSTALL
-I have reinstalled 98se into the same folder,
-removed the net files and re-extracted them per the MS KB article.
    -I have installed a new NIC driver(3com).
-ran sfc to replace any altered or corrupt files.
This Dell had black Ice installed on it and after uninstalling that and restarting I got a registry error at bootup which stated that windows was using a most recent backup of the registry.

Before I jump into blowing this installation of 98 out and starting over, I was wondering if anybody has seen this before. I am pretty sure this issue is in the registry but I don't know where to start.

Did you disable the on-board network in the bios? Is the NIC an ISA or PCI network card? Also, backup the registry before making any changes. Then search the registry for the application "black ice" and remove it. Boot the pc in "safe" mode and check for phantom drivers...(i.e. duplicated drivers will only show in safe mode) Remove all the drivers that you find are duplicated. Restart the pc---make sure you have the 98 operating system cd available. If you've disabled the integrated (on-board) network then the pc will find the network "card" and install upon re-boot into real mode. Hopefully this will help. Post back and let me know....;)

Oh yes, I've forgotten to mention, in the control panel, in Add/Remove Programs, the second tab is "windows setup ". Click on the communications and then details. Make sure there is a check by "direct cable... ". This is enable the protocols for networking. (modem will install also but will not impeed your network install).

As far as your registry is concerned, the blackice is still installed. In other words, you uninstalled it in one registry, restarted, then ended up with a backup registry with the old settings still there.
Regcleaner can help here. When downloaded and installed, then opened it will open at the Software tab. Look for blackice or Internet Security Systems entries and remove. Then go to the toolbar at Tools\Registry Cleaner\Do Them All.

    registry_hell that's were I am

    Hey Suze, Hey Mark

Thanks to both of you for getting back to me. I was beginning to think nobody would. This is a meaty issue. Suzette, I have uninstalled the entire communications section of winders. Then following an MS KB article, I renamed some dll's and inf's and extracted replacements(I'll post the list when I find it) It is the onboard 3com 920C that I'm trying to use. Incidentally when I try to install network components, the only component that will install is the NIC but it seems to skip past the choice of manufacturer showing me only the 3com choices.
Mark, I found another article which spoke of the registry keys that might not have been deleted when Black death...er..I mean black ice was uninstalled. Still same issue after deleting the keys mentioned in the MS article. I agree with you mark about the reg version, to my horror after several restarts during the procedures I mentioned above, I happened to notice that blackice appeared in the list of programs in add/remove programs. Still no love for my network. I'll try regclean and see if that gets any results. But then I think we're heading for blow out land as I ve already spent too much time on this. It is an interesting issue and I will post any final results. Thanks again to you;)
