I would like to go from 1 building to another but the problem is the other building is about 500mtrs away(buildings wont have line of site with each other). Has anyone done a wireless network over this distance with normal wireless network equipment. if so wot makes did they use and was the speed ok and reliable.

I've been waiting to see the responses to this. I have a similar situation and have not come up with an expeditious solution...

The only practical solution I've found is about a $4k-$6k investment in point-to-point line-of-sight transmission equipment. Which in your case is not possible, and in my case is marginally possible--the line of sight path puts the Rx-Tx at the furthest point on the building from where I need to tap in. Not to mention that a two story cherry-picker may be the only way of mounting the equipment on a building without a flat roof. That price range makes the requesting party's eyes roll, by the way because there's only two nodes over there that need connection. Dial-up speeds are abysmal even for dial-up due to attenuation (distance) from the CO.

My only possible alternative means is 2 pair out of a 50-pair cat-3 (telco) cable buried underground between the two buildings (demarc to extended demarc), but I've been unable to find terminating equipment that can deliver say, 5 mbps of throughput -- maybe down to 2 mbps -- over 500 meters.

    Homemade Antennas !!!

I've been up on the roof and i do have line of site between the two buildings. Also been in touch with a company who specialise in long range links but as you can imagine the equipment is quite expensive and i want to make my own antennas.
    HAS ANYBODY DONE THIS
