I recently switched hosts for my website. On my site I have several Windows Media Clips (wmv). On the last hosting service when one of the files were clicked on, it would open the player and play the file. Since switching, however, when I click on a file to play I get a page full of weird characters and no video. The clips are working for others but not for me.

Any idea what happened here and why the player isn't opening in Netscape to play the file??

    Hi Kenny,

I found a few possibilities for the problems you are experiencing with your web site, and streaming wmv files:

The web server is sending the wrong Content-Type with .wmv files.

The web server either does not know about .wmv files, or is sending a Content-Type to say the file is plain text.

Unfortunately, Netscape totally trusts the web server, and doesn't handle misconfigured servers, whereas IE does. That could explain why others are able to view your video clips, and you cannot. I couldn't view the clips either, and did get the text gibberish. I am able to right click, and save the video to my HD...

You probably should complain to the web server's Admin and ask them to reconfigure the server.

Here is a good source on MIME types, in the event your settings might be incorrect: http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#mime

Actually you may use Proxomitron to change the content-type header. If you're interested just tell me...

    Ramona, UP..

Thanks for the help and advice but I decided to change web hosts for the THIRD time this month. The new host I switched to does enable me to make certain changes directly to the servers. I uploaded my site there last night and checked one of my .wmv media files and it did the same thing, page full of text gibberish. I went into my control panel and added a MIME type to the list and viola...the clips worked!!

If you Ramona, or any other Netscaper here, can stop by my site and let me know for sure that this does again work in Netscape, i'd really appreciate it!

DNS changeover might not yet be propagated and you may get my "will return shortly" page.

    Thanks guys!! :)

Oh, one more thing here, does anyone know of a MIME type to add that will enable these clips to play on Macs???
