Is my java working?

When I go to certain sites & try to click on a link, on the status bar it may say something like "javascript: cu(some numbers here) but when I click on that link I get a window whose title bar just says "about blank - MSIE" & a blank window. [For example: at www.tvguide.com/listings when I want info on a particular show in the grid.] Are my settings for java wrong? Why isn't this working correctly & what should I do?
[Running MSIE6 on Compaq PC, 900 AMD, WinME]

I see that to , but if you put you're mouse in the title bar area or in the status bar you will see the old hourglass and eventually
content will appear within the popup, or maybe you have a popup blocker thats to aggressive ?

Perhaps I do not understand correctly, but you seem to say that you first click on a link, get that java message and then click on a second link. I do not think the second is a link for you to click on. Rather it is telling you the site has some java script that it wants to run. Why do you think you have to do anything after you have clicked on the first link? Do you go to the page you want if you just allow the first link to process?

However,you say this happens only on certain sites, so a popup/ad blocker could be the problem, as Lonny Jones has said.

This has nothing to do with Java. It is a javascripting problem. Try these until it works:

Go to Start > Run and try re-registering some files by running these at the command line:

regsvr32 msscript.ocx
regsvr32 dispex.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll

Then check if Open for file-type .js is properly associated:

1.) Open Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types.

2.) Find .js extension and click on "Advanced ".

3.) Click on Open and then the Edit button.

4.) Check and make sure the Application used to perform action field has this: C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %*
(modifying, of course, if C: is not your system drive and Windows is not your installation directory).

5.) Click OK until you're out of there.

Then, be sure wscript.exe is your default scripting engine:

1.) Go to Start > Run and type:
cmd

2.) Click OK.

3.) At the command prompt, type:
cscript //H:WScript

(You should receive confirmation that wscript.exe is now your default scripting engine).

4.) Type: exit

I hate to sound so naive but your answers seem a little advanced for me. How are these changes going to affect my PC? It helps me to understand what I'm doing before I do it. Are these changes reversible if they don't work?

I'm not using any pop up blocker, not waiting for an hourglass & I'm only clicking once on 1 link. It is only on this 1 website that I notice having any problem [TV Guide.] As my cursor is over the link the status bar tells me the link that I'm pointing to is a java script link. The pop up window comes up immediately and remains blank no matter how long I wait.
I've tried every suggestion on this thread so far - when I tried "Go to Start > Run and type: cmd" it said that cmd could not be found. The "regsvr32 msscript.ocx" said that it failed 'One of the library files needed to run this application can not be found ". On the TV Guide website at the listings grid clicking on the name of a show is supposed to give info on that show. This is what I cn't get to.

Do any of the links work at that site ? java script (from the grid)
also check tools internet options security tab , highlight the green and blue gloabe click custom level , near the bottom under scripting, all three should be enabled..?

what av do you use ? maybe it has some advanced options to control scripting?

Hi Todd

Abraxas gave you the fix for this.

His proceedure will correct something that is not currently working, but will not effect your system otherwise.

Print it out or what ever. Do it step by step. His instructions are clear. If you can read and move around in windows you can do this.

There is no 1 click nobrainer fix for this.

I myself had to go back and find it at the bottom of his message but he is running ME. This link is for 2K & XP only.

The original fix shoud do it.

Okay, I just downloaded & successfully installed Windows Script 5.6 for Windows Millennium Edition. My firewall is the free version of ZoneAlarm & my DSL, I'm told, has a hardware firewall. As far as I can tell ZoneAlarm shouldn't be affecting or controling scripts.

Replace the cmd with command. We had the idea at first that you had XP CMD will work for 2k and Xp but not ME.

So where it says cmd subsitute command!

Is my java working? Now it is! I just got done posting my last comment & I forgot to test it out before I wrote it. I have a feeling that the installation of the Windows Script 5.6 probably did the trick but I can't really say for sure.
You guys are great & I really appreciate all the time you took, how you kept hanging in there for me & just for finding this forum in the first place! I knew we'd get there eventually & with your help we did. Thanks again!
