My nephew at college is looking for a small "caller ID" program that outputs to his computer monitor. Caller logging would be a nice additional feature. Voice mail, mail box, ect NOT required (does not want his Buds hearing any recorded messages, will just call back to the party). He lives off campus with cable ISP, so modem is available to monitor phone line. Going to college, any extra funds are generally devoted to entertainment, so FREE would be a nice feature. OS is XP.

    Hi RASelkirk

Thank you very much for the lead. Took alittle poking around the site to find the program. Will email the program download link to my nephew. Looks like exactly what the doctor orderd. Hopefully his internel modem has the required features. Anything special to tell XP to monitor the phone modem along with it's current duty with managing cable modem? There using a multi-port router to share internet connection and network there computers.

On my system, as long as the phone cable from the wall is plugged into the "line" port of the modem, it should work. There is a config panel to setup the modem, but the defaults should work...

    Hi RASelkirk

Decided to set "Caller ID" up on my XP. The program detects incoming call, records time and date. Does NOT display/record caller name or number. At no time does "popup screen" activate. After numerious attempts, adjustments, decided to install "Call Trace ". A more robust program. Both programs found / identified the modem as "Intel V92 HaM Data Fac Voice." The "Trace Call" gives additional info per modem status / settings....
    Service provider----------------- unimdm.tsp
Voice features------------------- Answer Call, Playback, Record
Caller ID support (by driver)------ yes
OS------------------------------ Windows XP Service Pack 1
    Unimodem Version---------------- 5.1.2600.0

Unfortunately "Trace Call" only detects call... displays, records NOTHING. On all tested calls the phone equipped caller ID recorded all info correctly. This is the first time I've ever used the modem since purchasing the computer 10 months ago. Any one have any suggestions? .... Thanks

Some modem chipsets are better than others... hopefully the modem in your son's box has a better chipset.
