I have a Windows 2000 machine with a DVD player. Until I added a CD-RW a few days ago, the sound quality was very good. I nave a Goldstar 8240B CD-RW and a SONY DDU1621 DVD drive. The sound card, according to the Device Manager, is a Creative AudioPCI (ES1370), SB PCI 64/128 (WDM).

Now the sound quality is extremely poor, and most "music" or any sounds for that matter seem more like fingernails on a blackboard.

Is there a conflict between the 2 CD players perhaps? Might it be a question of getting the latest drivers?? Is it possible that the audio outputs on the back of the CD-RW (digital vs. "standard ") are switched? I had a computer service shop do the install after my own attempts at installation resulted in the temporary disabling of my hard drive! (guess I could call them but...)

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same problem when I added my TDk burner to my dual boot machine (98SE and Win2k). The sound quality was fine in 98 but was horrible in 2k. I finally called TDK. I can't remember exactly what I had to download, but it wasn't a driver for the burner. I think it was an updated ATAPI driver or something like that. It took the tech about 2 minutes to figure out the problem, so you may just want to call to save yourself some frustration.

    Thanks for your note.

I thought I'd disconnect the Goldstar CD-RW and see whether the sound is any better. If not, then perhaps there is some other problem (unless the drivers "compete" against each other whether the device is turned on or not).
