    This one has me beat.

I have an IWIll KD266 Board with an Athlon 1.1 and 256 MB RAM.

When this system boots up I get the standard everything is fine single beep. However, after about three or four seconds I get another 1/2 beep. I say 1/2 beep because it's almost like a stutter. The computer boots and operates fine but the additional 'almost' beep raises my suspicions.

It has done this with two different video cards. and there is nothing else installed on the board.

I have tried different memory and with and without anything hooked up to the IDE and floppy connectors.

I have also changed the speaker in the case.

My next step is to try flashing the BIOS.

    Any suggestions.

    Cheers,

    ICE

Couple of thoughts that may be way off base but ...

I've had problems (not half beeps) with high end video cards that pull a lot of power on startup. Even had to switch out a darn good 500w PS for a better 500w PS to get the thing to run right.

If you have access to a bigger PS, I'd try it to see if that beep is related to a peak load that your MB doesn't like. Couple of things to try if your MB supports them. Suggest one at a time and test driving each before drawing any conclusions. 1-Bump core voltage a bit. 2-Bump memory voltage a bit. 3-Bump AGP voltage a bit.

Concur with your thinking on memory but sounds like you already tested that.

    Good luck.

    Rockster,

    Well......

I was already in the process of swapping out the P/S when I originally posted. A switch from a 250W supply to a 500W makes no difference.

Processor voltage does nothing to solve it either. I can't see anywhere to adjust the memory voltage on this board and since the beeps are still there with the Radeon 7000 or the ancient Matrox 2MB PCI card I didn't even bother fooling with AGP voltage.

This board was to be used in a replacement machine for my folks in Florida but I think I'll just drop the $40 and get a different one. I'm simply not comfortable sending the machine down there when it's acting like this.

Put a check in the 'stange and mysterious' column for this one.

    Cheers,

    ICE.

Probabaly a very wise move since its ultimately heading out of town. Funny you should mention it though because the Video Cards I had so much problem with re: pulling power were Radeon 7500 All in Wonders.

The half beep throws me too. Regardless, why take a chance?

I've built 3 machines (all running nicely) for my Dad in Georgia - networked em' on a DSL setup - the good thing is, I can resolve any issue that comes up because I did the configuration. Sounds like you have a similar stuation.

    Good Luck and Smart Move.

    ;)
