    Markp62,
    I typed inC:\>ren config.sys config.bat
    I got the message,,,,,file not found - config.sys.
There seems to be a space between the f,,,,,and the i,,,,in config when I type the word config. I cannot put the f and i close like I can on this computer. On my computer it looks like this.....conf ig.

Hugh,,,,,I haven't found the Autoexec or anything else on my hard drive because I cannot get past this point.

    please markp62 note:

I did say that *not all of the files would be there*

I did not expect it to be there, but was trying to cover all eventualities (including the almost certain misfire of the rens: had you said to put cd \ first in yr. original instructions this would not have happened...)

but from the RUN: COMMAND route you are likely to be working in C:\WINDOWS\Desktop, and from Start>Programs>MSDOS Prompt you are likely to be working in C:\WINDOWS...)

I know I blew it with FC; but what I was trying to get at (from the A:> prompt was a binary comparison of the version of HIMEM.SYS that's on the Startup Floppy with the important one in C:\WINDOWS

putting such importance on HIMEM.SYS as it does load up beforehand. As might BIOS translation software (still trying to get a handle on that one)

(I was trying to mimic it and forgot I had a path set)

I'm trying to give it blow-by-blow to a poor guy who isn't even familiar with Notepad... and not knowing whether we are dealing with CONFIG.SYS or CONFIG.OLD doesn't help... all without relying on a very sick hard drive for OS or boot area

hopefully we may get some facts to work on soon!

    regards, Hugh.

(although now I learn that the floppy was only made after the trouble started - which I hope - very much - doesn't matter...)

    Hugh,
What do you mean by get the blue?
Do I start the computer with the floppy startup boot in or NO?
I'm sorry, I'm not good at this without explicit steps.

    Hi blakston6286

just got your replies, thanks, looks like fallen at the first hurdle!

don't worry too much about the space between the letters (I hope), the display character set won't be active, the lower case m may look odd too. Excellent you can access the backslash it's a right pain when that's hard to get at.

when you get to C:\> try doing the simple
    dir /p
and look at what you find - will give the answer I feel, whatever the files are called.

    (ignore config.ctl)

    Good Luck, Hugh

I'm a little worried that you aren't getting to the A:> prompt when you boot from the floppy. (or is this different with SE boot floppies? mark can you clarify this one pls - I don't have SE)

    Hi blakston6286

(markp sorry if I came on a bit strong, trying hard to avoid too many cooks probs!)

what I wanted you to do was to start up the PC using the startup floppy disk as that way the results will be more reproducible and safer to work with - as the way they get obtained will not depend upon what's on the hard drive.

we want to look at what's on the hard drive, but in a way that won't be affected if the HDD has had something awful happen to it.

the colour code I'm trying to use is blue to show what you should be seeing on the screen when you are about to type somethng in; and purple to indicate the actual text to type; <enter> means hit the enter key!

Thus, from power on with the floppy inserted: from what you say we can get to the menu, you choose the second option Start Computer with no CD support without typing anything else you should end up seeing
    A:\>
    on the screen

must go but only for 5 mins... could you pls confirm we are OK so far?

    Best Wishes to all, Hugh

PS I have edited a few bit of earlier post to try to make less confusing
PS have just read your earlier more carefully where you say
which makes my worry expressed at bottom of last post irrelevant I hope...
    ...back v. soon:)

    Hugh,
I rebooted and when A:\> appeared I took out the startup floppy and put anew one in. Then I typed in this
    A:\> copy config.sys a:
When I pressed enter this message appeared.......File not found - config.sys
I got a similar message when I tried it withcopy autoexec.bat as well.

how are you doing? - of couse they might well be called something slightly different... like CONFIG.BAK for example, but if the entries don't say <DIR>, then they are indeed files, not folders/directories.

    Hi,
I do get a similar readout when I use the dir/p on A:\>
I get a different readout when I do the same dir/p in the C:\> mode.
All this is very illuminating but I can no longer boot to desktop status. I also cannot load the config.sys or autoexec.bat onto the floppy A: as I am informed by my computer they do not exist.
What I need to do is be able to go somewhere and find a program that will route out and kill the directories and Invalid Long File Name that appears when i try to run Scandisk.
Presently my Scandisk tells me it cannot fix the Long Invalid File, and then tells me I must Scandisk Windows to do that..When I click the OK button Scandisk finds alot of strange directories that look like they were written by an ALIEN computer, many, many codes made up of symbols that are not on my keyboard but I have a suspicion they are alive and well in Microsoft script Font.
Soooooo, is there a tool somewhere I can download on my friends computer and pop it in my floppy drive a: Then somehow prompt a command to run what is on the floppy to attack the invalid files???????

    hi again

    you should be trying

    A:\> dir c: /p <enter>

first to identify the exact name of the files in question.

If you don't get the name of the file correct then it will not copy 'coz it cannot find the file...

    look for CONFIG.anything and AUTOEXEC.anything

(apart from CONFIG.CTL - is not what we are after)

and let me know how you are getting on?

    I think I see what's a-caring:

    look and type very carefully:

    A:\> dir c: /p

is what you should be using...

    if you just do

    A:\> dir /p

then you will get the results for A: not C:

but using the top one, the extra c: bit makes it work from either prompt

    let me know?

    OK......I did the A:\> dir /p (enter)
10 AUTOEXEC files appeared They were written in all Capital letters. Here is the list....AUTOEXEC DOS, BAK, OLD, MTM, PSS, NAV, NU4, SYD, _AV, PIF.

Only 5 CONFIG files appeared. They also were written entirely in Capital letters. Here is the list.....CONFIG DOS, MTM, PSS, SYD, _AV.

None of these files were written like AUTOEXEC.OLD. This is how they appeared, with spaces inbetween the acronyms.

This is how they looked.....AUTOEXEC(4 spaces)DOS
    CONFIG(4 spaces)DOS
Soooo, which one should I choose and what should I do?

    Hi

regarding the appearance of the filenames

when you type them in upper and lower case don't matter, and you always put the dot

the file AUTOEXEC.OLD will look like

AUTOEXEC(4spaces)OLD on the left, and on the right AutoExec.old (probably)

    this is perfectly normal

the mess is because too many programs have had a go at trying to "fix it" and blown it; and Norton is involved... this is not good.

will have details for you in ~5 mins, need to check something.

Considering the time difference between your location and mine I really appreciate you taking the time to walk me thru this nightmare. Somebody got me really good this time. If I didn't have so may important pictures and documents filed here I would just reformat and wipe the Drive clean......Which is regretably fast becoming the only option.
Maybe I oughta hook the HDD up to a power outlet and let er rip!!!!!

No worries friend we can still crack this

you had the files up until your post at 00:45H

unfortunately the last rename you tried at mark's suggestion went awry

but we know when it went wrong! and i don't think they are lost altogether

    we need careful typing!

and this ain't easy coz the filenames clash with so-called rescue attempts from the other software, would have been better to rename to text files first up. Still:

boot from startup floppy; choose 2 from the menu; have other floppy ready to go
when you see the prompt arrive:
remove the startup floppy and replace with the "transfer" floppy
    put in:
    A:\> dir c: > a:dirlog.txt <enter>
(if typed precisely this will also work at C:\> prompt!)
remove the transfer floppy, take to friend's PC, put it in.
use Windows Explorer, select the A: drive: locate the file DIRLOG.TXT (probably uppercase but may be lower)

and double click on it to raise the file in NOTEPAD

get BBS running to reply to me

switch back to NOTEPAD (task bar or AltTab) and from NOTEPAD's Edit menu choose "Select All "

from NOTEPAD's Edit menu, choose "Copy "

switch back to BBS put cursor in your reply at point to stick the bumf in

choose "Paste" (from browser) CtrlV will also work

    Good Luck, Hugh

this will show the file times... id the right one from that. but i think you did a typo on the rename of config... get this right we can still find it.
