    okay the link for ya...

okay i found the article in the May 2003 issue of PC World in the Bugs and Fixes section on page 59...

if you type find.pcworld.com/34289 in IE it will take you to the patch for the the problem with authenticating to web sites...they recommend that for more information please see KB article 813951 (the number to the left will be a clickable link in the M$ article)...

    I hope this helps...:D

In IE go to help, about Internet Explorer and verify that your Cipher Strenght is 128 bit.

    See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813951

The authentication issue is resolved by either the 813951 Critical Update OR the 813489 MS03-015: April, 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer...

The MS03-020: June, 2003, Cumulative Patch supercedes the MS03-015: April, 2003, Cumulative Patch according Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 818529 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818529

So, I would just get the June 2003 cumulative IE update and forget about the earlier patches.

    Alice,

I am at 128 cipher strength. (latest version of IE 6)

I looked at that site and nothing I tried helped.

Norton did fin the bugbear and sobig virus on my pc around the time this happened. I never ran any of the infected programs and used the Norton utility to remove them. Could there still be a problem?

    thx

Problem fixed! Uninstalled Norton firewall :) Even though I had it disabled it still was causing the problem. Thanks for all the help!

    Hi bob,

Glad you found the problem was Norton Firewall. Now you need to figure out why, and how to fix it, or what, if anything, you should use in it's place.

I don't use a firewall program myself, being on dialup.

    Good luck :)

    Hi, Alice ~

I'm not sure where you may have arrived at that idea, but being on dial-up does not make one less vulnerable to malicious attack, simple snooping or data theft, or loading a trojan. You may not have a continous 24/7 connection, but you are still wide open when you are online. You should at least have a free software firewall such as Zone Alarm - you'd be surprised what you would see in your logs. In the hour and a half on here now, ZA has blocked 49 probes/attempts of uninvited incoming traffic!

BTW - it is funny to see yet another problem/conflict as a result of a Norton brand product.

true true steelgtr...i have also read where malicious spyware that gets loaded on a comp and then dials out and uses the connection to rack up huge huge phone bills...

a dial up does not equal less chance of being hijacked...you still need protection...firewall and anti-virus...and the way the GOV is going and some of our senators, at some point the home user could be held legally responsible for their computer if it becomes involved in a DDoS attack and ya know what...I AGREE!!!!

I dont leave the front door to my home wide open saying come rip me off...why should i leave the front door open to my comp...there are enough criminals trying to find the backdoor in..sad but true...we are at a place of having "RESPONSIBLE COMPUTING!!!!! "

    Hello,

Any new news on this? I also can't connect to secure sites since installing IE 6. I installed the June 2003 patch and am at version: 6.0.2800.1106IC Update versions SP1; Q818529. Windows ME.

My firewall is BlackIce product version 3.6.cbd

Anyone mind providing a checklist of things to look for? I went through and think I tried all the suggestions I could find in posts on this subject.

    Thanks,

    Wes
