When I right click a .JPG image in an e-mail and want to "Save As" a .JPG file, my ONLY option available is .BMP.
How can a .JPG option or other formats be included? Thanks for any info!!

    Hi Skeet,

I think that depends entirely on your email client and, perhaps, whether you're right-clicking on the image, itself, or on the attachment.

First, what email client are you using? Second, what format is the image ACTUALLY saved in, .bmp or .jpg?

I'm currently using Mozilla Thunderbird for my email, and when I right-click on a .jpg image and select "Save Image As..." I'm offered the choices of JPEG Image or All Files. If I right-click on the attachment and select "Save As..." the only choice is All Files.

In either case, I can save the image with any extension I want, be it .jpg, .bmp, .png, .tif, etc, but it's still a .jpg. I confirmed that by opening a .jpg file saved with a .bmp extension in a hex editor ... the first line showed that it actually was a JFIF (.jpg) file.

Some viewers, such as IrfanView will catch the error and ask if the extension should be corrected. Others, such as ACDSee, simply display the image, identifying it with the incorrect extension.

I think your best bet is to download the image however your email client will let you, then convert it to the format of your choice, which you can do with almost any image handling program.

The images were originally saved as .JPG and sent as .JPG attachments.

I do right click only on the image itself.

My e-mail is from Bellsouth using IE 6 and web based mail.

I have NO problems like this using Win 98 SE!

Right now I use Irfanview to convert them to .JPG from the saved .BMP format but that takes more operations and time!

Thanks so far! Skeet F

Take a look at this MS KB article which basically says to clear the cache in the browser (Tools>Internet Options>Delete files) and any damaged downloaded files (Tools>Internet Options>Temporary Internet Files Settings>View Objects).

Yes, it may sound like that fix is unrelated to your problem but it's not.
