I have an older HP 7200e CD burner that I used to use with my desktop running Win 98. That computer has since gone to computer heaven and I now have a Toshiba laptop Tecra 8000 running Win 2000. I am not able to get the HP 7200e work on my laptop.

When I power up my laptop with the burner hooked up, the burner goes through its own start up - i.e. the power light goes on and off and you can detect it running on and off. At the same time windows is starting up and the progress bar bogs down about half way for a considerable time and then finally finishes.

At this point windows seems fine but it then goes into a loop and it starts over and over again with the progress bar doing the same thing. The only way out is to power off. When the CD burner is disconnected, the laptop will boot normally.

Is my CD burner going to be just another paperweight from this point Is there anyone out there who has had success using a HP 7022e on a laptop running Win 2000 or is it totally not compatible?
    Thanks

    TRoof

    Hi Hoot,

Just went to the site you recomended and did not find any downloadable software. I did find I could purchase a CD with updated software for $10. Is there something I missed or was this it? I would probably be better off putting the money towards a new burner since if I made the purchase it would not necessarily solve my problem. Just trying to save some money in the long run hoping to get my old burner to function.

    Thanks

Thanks Mike for the scary tag line.
I will check out the adaptec site also.

In the divice manager under SCSI and RAID Controllers it lists Adapted AHA-152x SCSI Host Adapete and
SCSI/RAID Host Controller with Yellow ! over them. Do I need to get rid of these and reload the original adaptec software?

    Thanks

The link you directed me to was one click away from the site Hoot sugested. Same result. No download. Just a forsale by mail CD update.

    Thanks

Oh I see! It is due to the length of the link. Instead of clicking the link copy it and paste it into the IE address line.

Here is a closer link (directly to the actual d/l).

    http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwa...oftitem=Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro&sw_lang=en

Get them but the yellow "!" is your problem. Don't use a cd to install, only as a last resort.

Just go into device mgr and remove it and reboot let 2k reinstall it. Then check it may now be correct, if not get back to me.

I had to step out for awhile but I'm back.

Mike I tried pasting the link http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwa...ubmit.x=0&cc=us as you suggested and got this message - "NOT Found The requested object does not exist on this server. The link you followed is either outdated, inaccurate, or the server has been instructed not to let you have it. "- I have removed the
Yello! from the device manager. When I hooked up the 7200e disk writer I got an error message right away. It said
K mode -exception- not handled No driver identified in stop error screen.

When I went to the closer link http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwa...0Pro&sw_lang=en
It took me to the same page as before - drivers and downloads for
hp cd-writer plus external 7200e drive.

    Nothing there to download.

I would like to get this figured out if possible but it is not the end of the world if it is not possible.

    Thanks

I can go up and click both of my links and they work from here. These are not old links I copied them from the address bar while looking at the page and then directly pasted it into the message.

Will someone else please test these links and report back?

But forget HP untill the controller is fixed.

Now the ones you paste back are dead to me.

You said you removed the item with the "!" but did you reboot to let windows reinstall it? Must reboot, without the cd connected and recheck the "!" as windows may not can fix it and it may come back.

If it comes back then it will have to be fixed first, nothing that uses that controller will work CD or not.

So if it comes back with a yellow "!" after removal then YES if you have the Adaptec cd then reinstall the SCSI controller. Or get newest driver for it at

    www.adaptec.com

Weird that the links work for you and not me. Also seems to work for Russ except for the same links that I copied from your post. Becoming more of a head scratcher than I expected.

My computer will not start up at all with the CD burner connected.

Yes I did reboot mycomputer after I removed the Yellow "!" from under SCSI and RAID Controllers in the divice drivers. This removed everything including the SCSI and RAID Controllers icon. Is that normal?

As far as www.adaptec.com. site I could not figure out what it was I was looking for. Figured I have best wait on that.

I still have the Adaptec "Easy CD Creator" software. I also have the "HP CD-writer Plus software" that was included with the 7200e. None of these seem to work running Win 2000.

Wonder what is keeping the computer from starting up with the CD connected?

    Thanks for dealing with this.

You must have a seperate problem causing you to not access thes links. Perhaps a popup blocker or some installed restriction or even a firewall.

Go to Google and search for 7200e.

As far as I can tell HP never did get 2k drivers made for the 7200.

Lots of reports about it not working.

You definately need the ASPI drivers from adaptec first.

From what I gather the 98 drivers for sure will not work.

Go to hp.com click driver download then type 7200e in search box. This will show you what HP has to offer.

    Hi Mike

If you are still there I tried the hp.com site and as you sugested I entered 7200e and was directed to a page refering to this link - drivers and downloads for hp cd-writer plus external 7200e drive. That page opened to the same page that directs you to a for sale CD. There was one download at this link ftp://ftp.scmmicro.com/connectivity/drivers/Epatap2k.zip which I downloaded but when opened did not fix my problem.

I was wondering if you could check out another site for me which I found through Google. This is what I found:

Current Windows 2000 software solution: Hewlett Packard (Veritas) Record Now and DLA (Direct Letter Access) software back to table of contents

The new Hewlett-Packard (Veritas) Record Now and DLA (Direct Letter Access) software are compatible with Windows 2000 and are available to download free. Use the following links to go to the software download pages. Follow the instructions on the download page to install the Veritas software packages.

    * Click here to locate the Hewlett Packard (Veritas) Record Now Software Download Page
    * Click here to locate the Hewlett Packard (Veritas) DLA (Direct Letter Access) Software Download Page

I really thought I was one to something!

I downloaded hp hdd firmware and tried installing it with no luck.

I guess this is probably as close to a non solution as I can get.

Thanks for your help and suggestions. If you ever come across anything else, I will give it a try.

    Thanks

Good news, problem solved I hope.

I went on E bay and snagged a SONY 48x12x48x EXT.PC/MAC CD-RW/R/CDRW/BURNER for $71 incl. S&H. Sorry, but I just had to give up. Just wanted to say thanks for the help though. It was fun trying. At least I didn't break anything.
I will be back if the Sony doesn't work.
