Windows Media Player 9 problem

Using WinMe. Windows media player 9 locks up when I open any type of media file (mpeg, avi, mp3, etc). Media player indicates that it is "connecting" but does not play. Cntrl Alt Delete stops the screen display but does not terminate the program. The media player is still listed in "running tasks ". Computer does not shut down properly because it cannot terminate wmplayer.exe. Rebooting removes media player from "running tasks" but does not fix the problem. No viruses are present. Reinstalling media player 9 does not fix problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

 

Do you have a Firewall?

If so check the permissions.

If it won't terminate in taskmanager the first time, hit ctrl alt del and end it again. Do you now get a seperate window saying "this task has stop responding" if so then clisck end.

Now xtrl alt del a third time is it gone?

Let me know the answers to these questions and we will continue.

Thanks for you reply. I do not use a firewall. Cntrl alt del removes WMP from "close program" menu and screen comes up indicating that program is not responding, and I select "end task ". In "system info" I select "software environment" / "running tasks" and wmplayer.exe is still listed as running but does not show up in "close program" box when I cntrl alt del. I believe that computer does not shut down properly because it cannot terminate wmplayer.exe

This could possibly be a DirectX problem.

So reboot and "do not" start WMP as to get it locked in memory.

Then install DirectX 9.

After it finishes reboot and recheck WMP.

Hi Mike,

I am using DX9; however, I ran the direct x diagnostic and came up with a registry error:

Key 'HKCR\CLSID\{92187326-72B4-11D0-A1AC-0000F8026977}\ProgID' is missing. I can try replacing this key and see if the WMP problem goes away. Any Ideas.

That key refers to a game controller that I do not use and is present in the registry.

You said you had reinstalled so try this.

Ok normally uninstalling WM9 will drop you back to Ver 7. So do this first and see if ver 7 has same problem. Let me know!

Additionly search for mplay2 and try it, it is still on the computer this is ver 6.4 see if it plays.

Last option that I can suggest unless we can glean something from above is a reinstall of IE6 as I have had this to fix similar problems. If you decide to do this here is the correct command and this will do a complete not just a freshen.

Hi Mike,

I cannot remove WMP 9 because I do not have a restore point prior to installing WMP 9. I rebooted after direct x diagnostic, and to my amazement, both mplayer and WMP 9 worked OK and I backed up the registry. As a sanity check I rebooted again and neither player worked. I will try your IE6 reinstall prior to the dreaded ME OS clean install.

You don't need a restore point to uninstall WMA, go to add/remove and uninstall. Then reinstall a new wmp9 later.

Restore is not for so casual a use as this. When you use restore if even a few days old you can lose additional things you may have forgotten about. Besides you may be restoring a bad WMP9 any way. Need to be fresh install.

But I would reinstall DX9 as the diag did something. It may look and say ok but reinstall it anyway.

With new info it is probably not IE but a reinstall will not hurt.

Hi Mike,

In WinMe WMP 9 can only be removed by a system restore to a time prior to installing WMP 9. WMP 9 is not listed in add/remove. I will reinstall DX9 per your suggestion.

Hmmm never used ME and glad of it.

Anyway did the DX9 and or IE reinstall fix anything. If it did not does Mplay2 play when WMP9 don't?
