For the last week or so my computer never stops running. This slows down the internet and work processing and everything else. I have closed every program that autoloads but no help. This is driving me crazy! Any ideas?

After a fresh boot, what are your resources at?
Have you done a recent scan with Ad-aware?

Sounds like you have the notorious Fast Find running.
You can stop it using the option after a double click on
the Fast Find icon in Control Panel.
    regards

When I click on "fast find" in the control panel it tries to install the program which of course I didn't do. It gives me a message cannot load "fastfind.exe. "

I assume this means this is not the problem?

    Thanks,
    Jim

I downloaded adaware and ran and it deleted a buch of files and registry entries. I then ran it again and it deleted a butch more. However, the computer is still running away.
How do I check resources after a boot?

    Thanks for your help.

Right click on My Computer...go to proerties.....and then go to your performance tab.

Have you made a clean run of Ad-aware yet?

After you've done a fresh boot, and checked your resources..........
Do a ctrl/alt/del and list for us what you have in the close programs dilaogue box.

When you say running away, do you mean constant or more than usual hard drive activity? Or do you mean you have some sort of CPU usage software running giving you info on the percentage of usage?
A list of what you do have running at startup would be of help.

    Computer never stops running

I finally did get a clean report from Ad-aware. All I have been betting is "tracking cookies" but they are gone now but they usually reappear every time I run the program.

After a boot my resources are 66%

    After a ctrl/alt/del I get the following:
    Explorer
    Pinkcal
    Zonealarm
    Navapw32
    Sysdoc32
    Weather
    Hpofxm07
    Hposts07
    Hpoevm07
    Loadqm
    Hpobrt07
    point32
    Systray
    Dkservice
    Nprotect
    Cg16eh
    Cgmenu

I have a program know as "Startup Cop" and it shows the following as loading at startup:
    Nprotect
    TrueVector
    Minilog
    DKservice
    GoBack Polling Service
    Script Blocking
    Norton Crashguard Monitor
    Scan Registry
    System Tray
    Norton Auto Protect
    Nprotect
    Critical Update
    Dainss
    LoadQM
    Pointer
    Weather
    Zonealarm
    Pink Calendar
Hpaiod Dev [This is a HP printer]
    Norton System Doctor
    Adobe Gamma Loader

The items on the first list ending in "07" seem to be new. I don't know what they are.

    Thanks agains for the help.
    Jim

Before I send you on a wild goose chase - I tracked the "07" files down and they are found under Program Files/Hewlett Packard/ etc. and they are apparently part of the files related to my HP PSC 950 printer/scanner/fax/copy machine.

Well, you've certainly got room to stop a few things from loading at start up.

Critical updates is one of them. It will constantly be working in the background.

Up to you, how you disable them. I prefer using windows own app.
Go to start....then run........then type in msconfig
Click ok.....then go tot he start up tab.
    Uncheck:
DkService.exe From Executive Software's Diskeeper defragmenting utility - a replacement for Windows ScanDisk. Used to schedule defragmenting on a regular basis and not required if you do so manually on a regular basis

Sysdoc32.exe Norton Disk Doctor from Norton Utilities. Automatically runs at start-up, major resource hog and best started manually form Start -> Programs. Delete the shortcut in the Start -> Programs -> Startup folder as well

Weather.exe Weather reporting in the System Tray. Available via Start -> Programs.

All those HP 07's Shouldn't you be able to start your printer manually?

Norton Crashguard Monitor Arghhhhh. I've got nothing nice to say about this program. The name itself is an oxymoron.

Norton System Doctor Norton Disk Doctor from Norton Utilities. Automatically runs at start-up, major resource hog and best started manually form Start -> Programs. Delete the shortcut in the Start -> Programs -> Startup folder as well

Adobe Gamma Loader Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it.

    No idea what Dainss is.

I knew my startup menu was bloated and I took your advice and eliminated most of the ones you recommended and it has helped but my computer is still slow. As I type this message, the computer does not keep up with my typing. This only started a few weeks ago.
The computer does not seem to run continuously like it did but something is still not right. I can live with it but I would love to get it back like it was.
I appreciate your help but if you have any other ideas I would love to hear them.

Eissal, if you were to go to Control Panel\System, then click on the Performance tab, do you see anything about Compatability Mode? Click the File System tab, what do you see there?

    Good call Mark.

Eissal - if it doesn't say DOS compatability mode, I would suggest you back up all of your data, important documents, address books and anything else you deem to be important stuff that you don't want to lose. Then, I'd wipe out your computer, reformat the drive and reload an operating system, drivers and then selectively reload your software. The real clue here is CrashGuard - even Norton gave up on that a few years ago. You probably have stuff on that machine that isn't just in the whisker category - you've got a full grown beard living inside there.

Sorry to be so blunt, but you'll spend a lot less time wiping that thing clean than you would trying to patch it up - and, you'll have a machine running at its optimum if you bite the bullet now and do what really needs to be done.

    ;)

I have gone to the Performance Tab and it doesn't say anything about any compatibility mode. What does this mean?
I clicked on the File System Tab and there were several other tabs but I don't know what to look for.
If this is all too technical I will just do it but I really don't understand what has happened and what is missing.
    Thanks,
    Jim
