When I put a disc in the "D" drive I get an error message that reads "Disk not formatted" Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows.

This problem started after I received online help from "Tech24" a Symantec help line. I had installed Norton System Doctor and had a problem with it which they corrected after going into Device Manager and a lot of other places. When I contacted them again they took control of my machine and said that it was a hardware problem not a software problem, they suggested that I clean the drive. Have any of you ever had this problem?

I know if there is an answer to be had it will be here.

    Thanks,
    Lenny

    May help, may not:

    Hardware:
Loose or corroded connection. Remove and reseat the the connector (data and power), as well as the connection at the motherboard.
Check the manufacturers website in case the drive may require drivers installed or a firmware update.
Could try swapping the drive and cables with known working ones.
Have you installed any other drives on the same cable, try swapping them as master/slave.

    Software:
The drive seems to be being read as a fixed disk. Could try removing it in device manager and let Windows redetect it.

A file in Windows may be corrupt.

    Lenny,

If Matt's suggestions don't help, do want my reference book states. Try playing an audio CD-ROM, if it does play, in all probability it is a damaged or defective CD-ROM. I beleive the computer response "not formatted" is general response to any reading problem.

Unfortunately, Symatic may have compounded the problem. Did Symatic state how they arrived at their decision?
