First I did a search for the problem and I thought I had an answer but it didn't work. What I thought was the solution was to download "regcleaner" and it would cure the prob on my wife's computer. No luck. Anyway she was trying to get rid of all of the McAfee related stuff that came with her HP (older model she got new 3 years ago w/win98se) and when she reboots she gets and error pertaining to a sys.ini problem of a missing file of which is: C:\program~1\mcafee\mcafee~2\safe&s~1\fbwin95.vxd . I know from past experience it is a hassle dealing with McAfee; they don't like it when you remove their stuff. Anyway with regcleaner I removed a couple items pertaining to McAfee and the error on "boot" still shows up. I also typed in the complete error in "regedit" and it didn't come up with anything. Also there was nothing relevent in the sys.ini file. What next??

Yeah, sorry I forgot to mention that. In "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT {0C568603-D79D-11D2-87A7-00C04FF158BB} VersionIndependentProgID" there is an entry of "ab (default) McAfeePCCBrowserFolderPopup.1 ". I didn't think that would be the cause so I didn't eliminate it.

No you do not type in error message in regedit.

Follow the steps exactly step bys step.

    1. Start-find-files and folders

    make look in say

    My Computer

in the find files box type

    mcaf*.*

Delete all files and folders related to mcaffee.

Then to search the registry like this, EXACTLY!
    Start-run
    Type
    Regedit

Hilite My Computer at the top of the tree.

Once hilited do a ctrl f to find

    Type mcaffee

Then enter to find, when it finds and stops, hit del key, then F3 to continue to next, when found hit del again to del then F3 to continue the search..

Once you reach the bottom and it says finished then slide the side and bottom sliders so that you can see the MyComputer at the top again. Click the My Computer to hilite and repeat the same steps all the way to the bottom. Then exit and restart the computer.

    Should be gone now.

If it is not then go to

    Start-run
    Type
    Sysedit

Select the win.ini file and look for any line that has Mcaffee on it and delete the entire line. But nothing else, nor move anything else around here.

Then do the same with the system.ini.

OK, that worked real good, except that I had my wife deleting things while I had to run to town; my mistake was I told her to delete everthing that came up, instead of just the McAfee stuff. When I got back and she said what she did I just rebooted the computer and the error doesn't come up but, she was missing a few icons in the system tray but she was able to get some back but her multi-media keyboard functions, sound, internet, and such don't work. Any idea how to get that back??

Pretend I am a Catholic, I am now crossing myself.

Oh yeah, I am sure it don't have that problem any more.

I am suprised it even came back up at all!

Would you leave the baby playing with the .45 while you went to town?

When I said "EXACTLY" I meant exactly "EXACTLY "!

OK tell me what all is missing and what don't work besides IE and Internet access.

    Details.

Perhaps restoring a backup registry before it is too late. When the computer is booting up, tap the F8 key repeatedly to get to the start up menu, and choose Command Prompt. If you miss it, just Restart in Dos Mode when shutting down. Type in this command at the prompt.
    Scanreg /restore
Using the arrow keys, pick the date before the massive registry editing. Then Reboot.
The problem entry you are looking for in the Registry is at Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shared Dlls .
It will be in the right pane, as it appears in the error message.

Well as it turns out it ain't that bad, in fact she seems to have corrected everthing that she needs. She got out the HP applications software CD and re-installed what was missing. And she was on the 'net tonite (not sure if it was Nutscape or Internet Exploder) and she didn't complain about anything so I assume everthing is OK. I shoulda waited awhile to see what would transpire before I replied, but I get annoyed, nervy, and whatever else when having to work on her computer. Altho I was impressed with myself for being able to remember some windows problems/fixes. I run Linux 90% of the time so to be able to remember is good. Especially since I just built and sold a couple windows computers I'll have to refresh myself on Windows just in case I get that call "It's broke, now what? ". Thanks for all the help in solving this delema. I know I went thru this a few years ago but of course the old board is gone and I had to repost on this new one. Of course I still gotta convince my wife that Norton is better.

    Many thanx. Pepse.:)

    Whooshsss...

I guess I might consider Catholicsism!

Mark was right on tho. Put back old regisrty and that would have put the problem back also, but then allow it to be cleaned properly.

    But sounds good now.

    Great!
