While upgrading to XP HOME Edition, I HAD to enter a name (administrator) but I did not want a password. Since I'm the sole user of my machine I like to just boot up and go and not be asked for a password. That's how things are now.

Task scheduler says you MUST enter a password. If I do this in task scheduler, will it require me to use that password each time I boot up? All I have is the obligatory Admin Account.

I wouldn't worry about it, the XP Task Scheduler is completely useless. I've tried for several weeks to run simple things through it and have never had a successful run - there is always an error message of some type or another. I finally disabled the durned thing.

Russ - sorry but I don't agree with that assessment. Lots of good stuff you can do via the task scheduler.

AceH - create another user account and give it a password. Add that account to the administrator group. Then use it to run any scheduled tasks. No need to ever use it for anything else unless you want to.

There is another way you can do this.
Download and install "Tweak UI" from Micro$oft. Create a password for your account and then open Tweak UI and select the "+" sign next to logon. Now select Autologon and put a check in the box and set your password.
You will now be able to use task scheduler.

    Newt,

Are you saying the reason I'm having T.S. problems is because I need a "different than Administrator" user to run tasks? I've only tried T.S. using the Administrator account and have yet to get it to work...

    Newt,

Ya there? I'd surely appreciate some insight and help on getting the Task Scheduler up and running. It WAS great on Win'98, but I've never had any luck getting a "run" of anything on XP...

From AceH - "If I do as you say by creating a user account and adding it to the admin group, will I have to use a password each time I boot up? " Nope. You don't need to ever log on to the PC with this account. Just use it to run stuff that needs admin rights. You will need to put in the username and password when you first set up a service but only the once.

Russ - you might want to try the additional account as well. Make sure you have a username AND password and that you add the account to the administrator group.

If you still have problems, post specifics on the task you are trying to run via the scheduler.

    Newt,

I'm not trying to step on your toes here, but why not simply set a password for RASelkirk and AceH's present account, that already has admin rights, and use Tweak UI's auto logon feature? This way they can still boot up without entering a password and they will be able to use task scheduler as well. It just seams like a lot of trouble to create a new accout and password that they will have to logon to just to use the task scheduler.
