I switched to Nero to burn my CD's. I have had no problems burning files from my hard drive. I copied a CD, afterwards I have Icons on my desk top. I counted 157! I tried to delete them, but they won't delete!! What happened? How can I get rid of them? Thank you, Chris.

Try rebooting and then delete...The files might be stuck in memory.

    Hi, Chris ~

You didn't say what else you were running, but IDX files can be index or database files from Outlook Express, Norton, and America Offline mail as well as Nero. Since it seemed to occur after you burnt a CD, what you have done wrong is that you probably encountered a dialog box asking if you wanted to create a database and you hit 'yes' whether you knew it or not.

What you will need to do is click here and download RegCleaner.

Once you install it, go to 'Tools' > Registry Cleanup' > 'Do them All'. Let it run and when done, check everything in the list and click 'Remove Selected' in lower right-hand corner.

Reboot and you should be back in business.

I did what you said. Thanks for the link. It didn't work, the Icons are still there.

".....create a database and you hit 'yes'" I remember now that is what happend. How can I get these Icons out of here? Why won't they delete?

    Chris,

What message are you getting when you try to delete them? Have you tried closing everything except Explorer and Systray with Ctrl-Alt-Delete then deleting? Have you tried deleting in SAFE mode? The only time that I haven't been able to delete an icon is when it's being used by some program.

    Chris ~

I just made a bunch of the IDX files and ran RegCleaner and they were all removed. Did you use Regleaner Right?

Also, have you tried deleting them from the command line? You will have to temporarily 'end task' w/ explorer.

fyi, Final count was 1,503 files. I think that's a big fault in nero. 1,503 files for one CD. What if I would of burned 50 CDs!!

What a wast of Hard drive space.

    Hi, Chris ~

Although folks like you and I wouldn't have any regular use for such files, other folks who utilize Nero with large projects w/ voluminous recording sometimes rely on such data files.

If you use them you are required to designate a folder in which to store them and that is not made clear in the Nero instructions which are notorious for being somewhat enigmatic if not helpful. Just make sure you select 'No' should that 'create database' option come up again.

For the record, the 'RegCleaner' software I suggested you download which will clear the Nero registry entries and thus the IDX files from you desktop is not the same as the RegClean you already had. It is easy to get them all confused as there seems to be many similarly named products.

Glad to know you finally got it under control! :D
