i'm not shure this the correct place to post this but here it goes...

I have a computer (A) with windows 2000 advance server directly connected to the internet (cable) and another computer (B) with windows xp with a internet connection shared by computer A (ICS)..

i have Messenger in computer B, and when i try to send files from this computer the other person can't receve them, there's some kind of error, at first i thougth it was because the other person had a firewall or something, but this person can receve files from others.

I can receve files, but not send them, i disabled my firewalls and still nothing....

Does anyone know what could be the problem...

This behavior can occur because of ICS. Windows Messenger does not currently support ICS. The only network address translation (NAT) supported by Windows Messenger is NAT that supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP).

The problem is not the firewall, the problem is Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), which is available from Windows 98 SE onwards.

Easy answer, get a router and after installing it, go to ther manufactors website and find out how to setup the bypass for the ports needed to send the files. You should be able to find one for $50 with 4 ports.

Well, I'm just repeating what Microsoft writes in their MSKB: Whiteboard Session Between Two Computers Does Not Connect

The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Windows Messenger 4.5

    Just now I also found
Frequently Asked Questions About MSN Messenger

    Which includes:

    Hello Arie,

here I qoute from the link you sent me:
    File Transfer

If you use Internet connection sharing, you will not be able to send files using MSN Messenger. You will be able to receive them, but not send them.

and now I go to the Networkcornection thats chared And there I find "Chared with firewall" and when i put off the firerwall I can send files on both computers with msn!!!! If you dont beleave me ad me to your msn and we make contact and also with windows help you can take my desktop and see everyting.
My E-mail adres is t.emmelot@chello.nl and for MSN
    temmelot@hotmail.com

Thanks for all your help, i had already tested without the firewalls, windows 2000 advance server does not activate a firewall like XP does..

either way, i did not know that Windows Messenger did not support ICS, thanks for the tip.

As for Tom Emmelot i also did what u did, and still couldnt send the files, it always returns an error, and i tryed more than one version of Messenger, including the last one...

So, why not send the files from the WinXP computer?

    Regards

    Hi Guys

Have a simple XP / w95 local networked bridged through a Linksys Befsr41 (NAT type). My local network was setup using Network Wizard... the router/shared internet connection was set up by Linksys Wizard.... my "assumption" all components set to "default" type settings. Trust me guys, I really don't know how it works... just glad the Wizards did. Using MSN Messenger and AIM IM, both can send AND receive files between themselves. Did not make any special settings other than agree with default questions when setting up the router/internet share (setup first) and then local network.

Another possibility for you, if you do not wish to add a router to your system, is simply to use Messenger to send files on computer A. Or, connect computer B directly to the internet instead of computer A. That way, computer B can send files (but you must still turn off ICS before sending!)

I can confirm from experience on our shared internet setup that ICS won't allow computer B to send files or do voice chat (but you can receive files).
