After being forced to reformat my hard drive and reinstalling Windows 95 (OSR2) I'm now stuck with IE4 and Outlook, as IE5.5 is no longer available for download from the Microsoft site. But I've now found another site which offers old versions, including IE5.5 with SP2 Service Pack complete, for download (about 80 megs).

In the meantime I've tried Opera 7 as an alternative but it seems so messy and cluttered, with a complicated mail client and a very limited newsreader, that I want to get back to IE and OE5.5, both of which are at least familiar and a big improvement on IE4 and Outlook.

    My question is:

If I download IE 5.5 can I safely install it over IE4? (I hear horror stories about the consequences of uninstalling IE4 first).

    Any other alternative suggestions welcome!

    Many thanks

IE 5.5 will go nicely over IE4.
If it messes up, you have access to the repair option, MSupdates, and/or can revert back to IE4 easily.
