    Eweek article http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1122764,00.asp

Based on history, this will most likely play out as the "Browser Wars" have.

This will also make a great many users happy, perhaps the majority, who don't like to make decisions, especially technical ones.

For the rest of us, not good news.

To me, it makes sense to have an antivirus function built into Windows, probably integrated into Windows Update to keep it up-to-date, especially for new users.

I know more than a few people who have NEVER updated their antivirus program (I've received e-mails with attached viruses from a couple of them!).

My sister's HP computer came with a wimpy 90-day introductory subscription to a McAfee online virus "clinic" which didn't even have the capacity to scan your system offline!

Basically I agree with both of you.

It probably will play out like the Browser wars.

Especially the fact of being imbedded to the point that it will not be able to be removed.

I personally want a choice. I probably won't get one.

That is **** that M$ forces on us. It is not really nessesary that the Browser be built into the the OS (really the GUI).

If MS integrates anti-virus programs into the OS, they may have to defend that action in court based on monoplistic tactics, and then mandated to unbundle.

But if the integration is identified and applied as a file protection feature with updates that may be welcomed by consumers. MS has a security presence and to provide additional protection is their responsibility.

There will be much grumbling from third-party app developers in a very lucrative segment of the industry, but a centralized defense against abusive and invasive intrusions into a computer system may be in the consumers' best interest. If nothing else, MS would be available and a "whipping boy" for complaints from users for not providing a trouble free OS.:)

    Hi Ken,

True to form, I'm the pessimist and you're the optimist. Hope your right!
