    I have Netscape 7. I have tried to change the default search engine to Google. Without luck-it always resorts back Lycos. Anyway to change it to Google?

    Robert2003,

    Go to Edit/Preferences/Navigator/Internet Search/Default Search Engine. Click on the drop down menu and select Google, or what ever you need. That should change the search engine for you.

    If that does not work, try adding in the following line to your user.js file.

    user_pref( "browser.search.defaulturl ", "http://www.google.com/keyword/ ");

    Not working

    I already tried doing the engine under Edit, Preferences etc.. and it doesn't work.

    I edited User.dat AND also Prefs.dat with :

    user_pref( "browser.search.defaultengine ", "http://www.google.com/ ");

    and...

    user_pref( "browser.search.defaulturl ", "http://www.google.com/keyword/ ");

    Still, it's not working. If you try it, is it working for you?

    Thanks for your help so far.

    That works on my system.

    You did not say which version 7 that you have, but if it is lower than 7.02, then try upgrading to 7.02.

    Also, have you tried creating a new profile to see if that works.

    Sometimes, a profile can get corrupted and cause weird problems.

    Robert,

    Just to cover the basics, the edit to the user.js won't be effective until you restart Netscape. Are you doing so?

    You might want to try this script, which will allow you to call Google using the Netscape Throbber, in the upper right hand corner of the page:

    user_pref( "browser.throbber.url ", "http://www.google.com ");

    And if you want to use it in the following components:

    user_pref( "messenger.throbber.url ", "http://www.google.com ");
    user_pref( "compose.throbber.url ", "http://www.google.com ");
    user_pref( "addressbook.throbber.url ", "http://www.google.com ");

    Works for me, and I hope it will work for you...

    I'm using Netscape 7.02 and in spite of your good help-it is not working. I even tried Ramona's idea and it isn't working.
    I literally rebooted and it didn't work. All I get is the Lycos Engine or the Overture Search Engine when hitting the Search Button left of the printer button upper right. It's nuts.. I'm going to try contacting Netscape on this-thanks for all your help.

    One thing DID work!! Ramona's script DID work. The Netscape icon in the upper right hand corner-with the script now goes to www.google.com-thanks! It's better than nothing-for now

    Hi Robert,

    Glad that the script worked, but it is only a workaround. The option in your Preferences which Minnesota Mike suggested, and the scripts given you by Brooks, should have been the fix. Contacting Netscape will cost you $35, and it's "help for free" on the Netscape Forums. ;)

    Brooks suggested a corrupt Profile, and to create a new Profile. I would definitely go with his suggestion.

    Let us know your progress.

    Hi Robert2003

    Just a suggestion... I use "Google" as my home page (advance view). As most of us, we are are always going to Google for a solution, answer, help, you name it. My keyboard is key mapped for "Web/Home ", "Mail" "MS search ". I like using Google as my home page because it loads fast and when I need the a search screen.... just hit my "Web/Home" button" and a new screen view pops up with Google Advance ready and waiting to do my bidding. As most of you, we have a passion for our "Home page" view. Mine just happens to be google.

    I took the Pref.js file out of the directory it was in and restarted Netscape 7.02 to no avail with the Search function.
    Basically, I set the Internet Search Engine under Edit-Preferences, and set it to Google, yet it comes up Overture. Odd?
    I sent Feedback to Netscape saying my problem. I left my email address. Since it really isn't a problem where I don't know how to use something and it is a software thing-I don't think I ought to be charged and their feedback doesn't charge any money.

    Another thing to try is -- open My Computer then control panel and select 'Internet Options' under the General tab set http://www.google.com as your home page, works for me, it loads Google when I open Netscape.
