I need some help installing SP1 for IE6 under ME. When I try to install, it goes through whatever it does then puts up an "Install Incomplete" error window. It says the componenet it ws unable to install was IE web browser (that kind of defeats the purpose :)) with no other information, like why it could not install it. If I then click "Finish" it immediately reboots (without asking) and when it comes back up it asks if I want to resume the install or start from the beginning. No matter which I choose, I get the same result. This becomes a loop until I click "Cancel" after the reboot.

Can someone please help me figure out what is wrong so I can get past this. Thanks.

    Hi

Read the trouble shooter , read everything in this section:
    "Problem Downloading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver) item "
even if they appear to apply to other problems and OS's
turn off anything that might iterfear(monitor) with the download and install ,basicly everything non MS,
    Troubleshooter

You could after a fresh start delete contents of windows temp
and the install icon on desktop
clear IE's cache reconnect turn off everything except explorer and systray(with the close program Box) expecialy your av program, they have been
been known to iterfear with installs , even without it being noticable..at first, then do windows update again., do you have any download utilities if so turn off any browser monitoring, and it, they may corrupt an MS install package(even if not used for that download)
    ===============
    Good luck

No, it will be Monday or Tuesday, at the earliest, before I can get back to that. Thanks for the suggestions, you gave me a lot of homework to do.

I think I did everything, including killing every process except 'explorer' and 'systray'. No joy.

It doesn't seem there is any place to go from here, especially since it gives absolutely no clue as to why it thinks it cannot install the browser.

    folder ?
any third party disk utilities , security and download software

what is you're current version and details (of IE)
Mine looks like this My version current
Version:6.0.2800.1106__<<<<<<what version? and any letters here
product ID XXXXXX this is not blanked out is it
    cypher strength: 128-bit ?whats you'rs
    Updateversion;SP1;Q328970;Q324929;Q810847;Q813951;Q330994;Q813489;Q818529

Thanks for taking the time to help. I hope I can cover everthing here. You are not shy about giving me homework. :)

Windows Update.log - All lines say "Success" ( there is nothing that indicates what specific product to which each line applies but since the last thing was IE6 I assumed the last lines applied to that but in any case there were no errors anywhere).

The only 3rd party disk utility I can think of is VXOpt.

I do have Norton AV but I killed it before doing the update (not just disable auto-detect).

I do have some 3rd party download software, Mirc, Kazaa and SmartFTP but none were running at the time I did the update. If it matters, I also have Cerberus FTP server, OpenSA and MySQL installed but again none were running at the time.

Version details are problematic. I think it depends on where you look. On "My Computer" properties it is ME version 4.90.3000. I don't know where to find the other stuff you posted. If you tell me specificaly where to find it I will post it.

As to where it stops, the progress bar goes to 100% and at that point it appears it has finished successfully. However, instead of the reboot window coming up it puts up a window that says some components could not be installed. The list area in that window for those components contains a single entry, Internet Explorer 6 web browser. There is only an OK button to click and when I do, it immediately reboots without warning or asking. When ME comes back up it says setup did not complete and I'm given the option to resume setup, restart setup from the beginning or cancel.

    Whew! :)

    Hi gw1500se
I hope others here will also make some suggestions ...
You didn't answer about the O bit OEM.ini files are there any 0 bit OEM files within the windows inf folder ,, to be able to see this hidden folder you need to with folder options control panel folder options> view tab uncheck hide protected operating sys files and folder and check the show hidden files and folders

The Internet explorer version and details can be found if you on IE's toolbar go help about.

Merely stooping a program is not enough in some cases, with my download utility I have to turn off browser monitoring and with my av program instead of just turning it off I would turn off its resident scanner ----

Kazza opens the door to spyware viruses and Trojans , do you have SpyBot and Adaware , theres links all over this forum to them..

At this point I'd suggest you use a system restore point to before you had these problems, system restore would have made a restore point before (usually) windows update,
then install both spybot and adaware update them and scan with

then with msconfig stop everything except windows services and you vid card ,explorer, systray,
then do the updates again,, , get only a couple at a time and always reboot if given the choice..never decide to restart later.

are you familiar with msconfig ?
" "VXOpt" " dont know what that is.

Sorry, I forgot to mention OEM.ini. That file does not exist. The closest I can come is OEMINFO.ini but there is nothing it.

I do have Ad Ware but I didn't think I needed both so I will get SpyBot as well.

I thought you were asking for ME info and it never occurred to me you wanted IE, DUH!

    Version 6.0.2800.1106
    Cypher Strength 128 bit
    Product ID: 55736-808-8075537-04946
    Update Versions:;Q330994;

I wouldn't know what install point to use. This was a fresh install and I updated everything I had after the install. IE6 was the only one that gave me trouble.

I am familiar with msconfig, what I didn't know was that using the close program window was insufficient.

    Thanks again.

Not install points - systen restore points ,, start programs Accessories, system tools, system restore, go back to before any trouble started,, I have it set to max so theres usualy two mounths worth of restore points to chose from.

I have a feeling it was nortons auto update that coused problems
    SpyBot is a little better
    Keep us up to date.
