win 98 and win xp on same machine

I already have win xp installed on my comp, but i was wndering if i could install win 98 on it also because i need it for some programs that i have that dont run on XP, would this cause any problems if i installed 98 on my comp?

thanks but that post doesnt help me at all. i dont want to run them at the same time, and i only have 1 hard drive

 

I could be wrong here.

But It is my understanding the 98 would have to be installed first and on the first HD.

XP has the Dual Boot but 98 does not.

I do not think you can install 98 after XP.

And what programs ( or type of ) won't run. All of the ones I had in SE run just fine in XP. Except one ancient DOS game.

Bit also I put XP overtop of SE.

this is one of the files that does not work, the others are compiled with the same thing i think, so if you could get this to work that would be easier then having to install 98


a friend just told me also that he had XP on his machine first and he just ran the 98 cd and installed it in his comp from XP and now it just asks him which one he wants to startup with when he boots.......
thats all i wanted...is he right?

 

I can't be of much help with XP right now as I do not have that HD in the machine.

I am on my Win98SE HD.

I took the XP HD out as I do not want 4 to12 years old kids messing with it.

I Agree. If you cAn get it to work it would be much easier than having to put 98 back in.

OK, there's probably 3 ways to do it.
On one hard drive, you need 2 partitions, and a 3rd party boot manager.
XP is on C, so leave it there.
Install the boot manager, and make it's default boot to the second partition. Now you can install 98.
You could also just install 98 on the second partition, then run an XP repair install to get the dual boot menu.
If you have two drives, there are any number of ways.
You can remove the XP drive, fdisk, format, and install 98 on the other drive, then put the XP drive back in, and manually set up the boot.ini.
We need to know exactly what hardware setup you have (one disk or two, and is it partitioned?).
We need to know which method you feel most comfortable with.
