I know in Win 98SE when installing a program to use Ctrl-Atl-Del to shut down everything except Explorer and systray.
With Win XP's Ctrl-Atl-Del I see Explorer, what else do I need to leave running. In other words with Win XP shut down everything except?

P.S. Is there an XP equivalent for scandisk?

I never found that to be necessary in SE or XP. But it does depend on what is loading.

Yes. It is Checkdsk or CHKDSK whatever the name is. I do not have my XP HD in here right now so I can't be sure of the spelling.

BTW. It also runs after a bad shutdown just like Scandisk did in 98.

I have no damned idea where it is cause as you say it does not showup anywhere.

I just did a start~run~and typed in Checkdsk C: and it ran. Then typed in checkdsk d: and it ran. You do need the dirve letter to make it work right.

I got the name from when it ran at bootup.

I would not be a bit suprised the file was stored in the C:\Windows\system32 folder. That is where I recall the DOS files were.

BUT, We are not supposed to find this stuff in XP. MS apparently does not think we need to know.

If I had my XP HD in here I could be of more help. But I took it out cause we will have about a dozen kids ages 4 thru12 over the weekend and I just did not want them messsing with XP.

Unless I was to put it back in and put the password back and get rid of the Auto Logon.

    Hello AceH,

My Computer > right click on the drive you want to check > properties > tools.

Choose the check disk option. This will schedule a ckdsk at next boot up. This happens because the checking is done in safe mode by the system.

    Hi BillyBob,

"I put XP in on top of SE so things may be ( no are ) a little different. "

That may be, I clean installed XP, but the difference here is you guys set Windows to the "Classic" look, ie, look like 9X.

    Regards - Charles
