I can't get my browser to open in Netscape. It opens in IE. I tried everything in network solutions, but nothing worked.

    Hi lbfoto,

We're going to need more information in order to be clear on what's happening. Can you be more detailed in your description of what happens when you try to start Netscape?

    Thanks!

    Hi lbfoto,

It sounds like you haven't made Netscape your default browser. If IE opens as soon as you log on to the Internet, do this:

    Go to
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
    Click on the "Programs" tab
Disable: Internet Explorere should check to see whether it is the default browser

    Open Netscape
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator
In the right hand pane, click on the "Set Default Browser" tab
    Then
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced | System
    Insert a tick beside:
    HTML documents
    and
    http: (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
    https: (Secure HTTP)

    Next:
Right click your Netscape desktop icon
    Select: Properties
    Click on the "Shortcut" tab
You will see a target line similar to this:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe "

To the end of this target line, add your Profile name, as follows:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -P lbfoto
Note: there is one space between the end of the target line and -P

It's sometimes necessary to make IE the default first:
    Go to
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
    Click on the Programs Tab
Enable: Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.

If this is what you've referred to, by "trying everything on the Solutions page ", then give it one more try.

I followed your directions and still logged into to IE. Got "IE 5.5 not currently default browser" dialog box. clicked no and went to ISP home Page.
which is O.K. Still want NS to login on NS home page.

One thing was confusing. The target line. What was there was "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape. I added \Netscape.exe(space)-P lbfoto and just added (space)-P lbfoto. No luck!

    Hi lbfoto,

The target line you indicated here:

    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape

is incorrect for Netscape 7.x. Look again at the example I gave you above, and you will see that it is :
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe "
    not
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscape.exe "

The Netscape.exe is the Communicator 4.x executable file. Netscp.exe is the Netscape 7.x executable file.

Also, I used "lbfoto" as an example for your profile name. Ensure that you do use the correct Profile name.

To have Netscape open with your ISP Home Page, go to:
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator
Put a dot in the Radio Button: Home Page
In the Home Page area enter the URL for the ISP page
    OR
Browse to that page, and click on the Use Current Page button

I have done all the above and EI still loads in browser.

I am confused about Profile Name. What am I supposed to use for name? Username, ISP name, I tried both, neither works.

When I hit set default browser button to set netscape, then restart browser, check default button again, It says to set default browser again.

Starting over......hope you don't mind if I add my 2 cents.
Are you by any chance clicking on a desktop icon for your Internet Service Provider's dialing software? For example, with AT&T there is something called a "Connection Manager ", that used to have a blue globe (I haven't used it in years). When you open the AT&T Connection Manager it dials into the internet and opens Internet Explorer, if that is what the Connection Manager has set up in the program settings.

What you could try is, open Netscape directly by using the Netscape desktop icon or Start Programs menu. If you have a webpage set up as your start page, that should trigger the dial-up assuming you have a dial-up-networking connectoid set up for your Internet Service Provider [ some ISP dialing plans don't create a permanent DUN connectoid]

Who is your Internet Service Provider? Possibly there is some information on your ISP's website about connecting to the internet and having another browser besides IE open up.

    lbfoto,
By Profile name I was referring to the Profile name you selected when setting up the Profile, and appears here:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
    (Depending on your OS)

    Check your settings for:
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
    Click on the "Connections" button
If you select: "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" then the DUN window should automatically appear, once you open Netscape using the Desktop icon.

Let us know if this helps.

    Alice;
I have been using ISP icon to start Navigator. With NS 4.79 I could make it work that way. Now, IE downloads and I stop it, then click NS icon and NS loads and works fine.

    ******

    Ramona;
When I click NS icon to start ISP, NS loads, then I get an NS DUN box which has my user name and password in it. When I click the start button (or whatever) my ISP comes on line then I get an invalid user name or password message.

Can you smell it? I think I'm getting closer. LOL

    lbfoto,

Success is definitely in the air.

If you are getting an invalid user name/password error, then can I assume that you have double checked your 7.02 Server Settings for accuracy? Could there be a typo....

Did you check your ISP Home Page for Troubleshooting Tips, or a Tutorial on how to connect, using Netscape?

Check Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Proxies
Have you enabled: Direct connection to the Internet.

Ahhh, yes. My suspicions were right ;)

    Success is in the air!

Now you might be able to change the browser that opens from INSIDE the ISP dialing software. Who is your ISP? Maybe we can find the directions on the ISP's site. I would look for a setting, option, or preference menu item when you first start the ISP software, or try a Help button if you see one. With ATT, if I remember right, you could browse to the exe file for the Internet software you want to start and select it. With Netscape 7, the default path is something lice C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 7\netscp.exe? Ramona could tell you better. I don't have Netscape7 installed, I have Mozilla 1.0.1
I think you could be a little bit clearer on that. You say it's a "NS DUN box "? See what it says in the Title bar.

When you say your ISP comes on line, I assume you meant that, after clicking the 'connect' button, you hear the modem dialing, then the connection sound, and you get a message about being connected to the remote computer, then something about checking username and password? At that point, what happens? Do you ever see the Dial-up Networking icon (two connected green boxes that blink when connecting to sites, on my PC) next to the clock? If not, then the ISP username and password validation has failed, most ikely because it's an old DUN connectoid to an old ISP account.

Go ti Start Settings Control Panel, open Internet Options Open the Conntection tab. You might have the wrong ISP as the default connection . You can make the correct one the default if another ISP connection is listed. It may not be.

Like I said before, some ISP dialing plans don't allow for a permanent DUN connectiod. The dialing software does it all, creating the conection as you need it, not leaving any connecoid in the My Computer Dial-Up-Networking folder after the connection is closed.

In that case your best bet is to find the correct setting to start Netscape7 in the ISP's connection software, OR. see if you can create a new, permanent Dial-Up-Networking connectoid for your ISP, then make that the default connection in Internet Options on the Connection tab by selecting it and clicking "SET Default ". You wil need to have your dial-in phone number, ISP username and password, and other settings handy. Check with your ISP for details.

-WELL!!! Finally, after all this, an anwer that is no answer at all. I've been doing the following ever since I downloaded Netzero 7.02. I am sending this post for your FYI. Ramona and Alice, I want to thank you both for the time and effort you put into this. You both gave me excellent instructions, unfortunately.......... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Dear Leonard,

Thanks for taking the time to write to NetZero e-mail support.

The only way to connect to NetZero is by using our proprietary software. Although our software requires the use of Dial-Up Networking, you cannot use Dial-Up Networking by itself to log on to NetZero. If you want to surf the Internet or check e-mail, you must always connect to NetZero first.

To connect to NetZero, double-click on the NetZero icon on your desktop to bring up the log-on screen. In the log-on screen, select your Member ID, type in your password and click the "Connect" button.

You should NOT change the Dial Up Networking telephone number. If you change this number, you will experience difficulties connecting to NetZero.

After connecting, your browser should launch automatically and you will be able to manually launch any other Internet application or surf the Internet as you choose.
    ________________________________________

You will not be able to completely use the Netscape browser version 6.0 and higher with NetZero.

Though you can use Netscape version 6.0 and higher to surf the web, they cannot be specified as the default browser and hence will not launch when NetZero loads.

Internet Explorer will load the advertisements at the time of log on, and the Platinum Toolbar or the NetZero port will not pull up Netscape pages, or Netscape Messenger as the e-mail client.

Our engineers are working to resolve this issue, but for the time being, please follow the steps below to downgrade to an earlier version of Netscape.

    1. Did you make Netscape version 6.0 and higher your default browser?

If you received a "Desktop Integration" window stating "Do you want to set up Windows so that it will use this application whenever you open the kinds of documents and Internet shortcuts this application can view" and clicked on the "Yes" button, Netscape version 6.0 and higher is now your default browser. Skip to Step 2 below.

If you did not click "Yes," then you do not need to make any changes. Please ensure that you use only Netscape 4.xx, Netscape 3.xx or Internet Explorer while connected to NetZero.

    2. Make an earlier version of Netscape your default browser.

If you still have an earlier version of Netscape installed, please open that version of Netscape.

If a window appears asking if you would like to register Navigator as your default browser, click "Yes" to make your previous installed version of Netscape the default browser. This version of Netscape will now open when you logon to NetZero. Please use only this version while using NetZero.

    3. Reinstall an earlier version of Netscape.

If a window did not appear prompting you to make your earlier version of Netscape the default browser, or you no longer have a previous version of Netscape installed, please follow the instructions below.

    1. Click on the link below to download Netscape Communicator 4.78.

    http://home.netscape.com/download/0730101/10000-en-win32-4.78-base-128_qual.html

Note: If you are unable to reach the download site by clicking on the link above, please follow these steps to copy and paste it into your browser.

    a. Click and hold the left mouse button at the very beginning of the link.
    b. Holding the mouse button down, drag the cursor to the very end of the link. The link will become highlighted. Release the mouse button.
    c. Hold down the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard and press the "C" key. Release both keys.
    d. Open your Web browser. Click in the "Location" or "Address" bar and delete the text currently displayed.
    e. When this is done, hold down the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard and press the "V" key. Release both keys.
    f. You have now copied and pasted the link into your Web browser. Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard and you will be taken to the Web site where you can download the Netscape software.

    2. When the download begins, ensure that the circle next to "Save to disk" is selected.
    3. Click "OK. "
    4. In the "Save In" drop-down menu select "Desktop. "
    5. Click on the "Save" button.
    6. When the download is complete, stay connected to the Internet. Close your browser and double-click on the file "sd_cb32d478en.exe," located on your desktop.
    7. This will start the Netscape 4.78 download. If you are disconnected you can resume where you left off or you can pause your download and resume at a later time.
    8. When the download is finished click on the "Install" button.
    9. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Netscape. When you reach the "Netscape Desktop Preference Options" window, ensure that "Make Netscape Communicator my default Internet browser" is checked, and then click "Next. "

Netscape 4.78 is now your default browser. Ensure that you use only this browser or another browser that NetZero supports while connected to NetZero. Please check back for updates concerning a software release that is compatible with Netscape versions 6.0 and higher.

I hope this addresses your concerns. If you have further questions, feel free to reply to this message and either I or another support agent will try to assist you.

    Sincerely,

I ws afraid of that. Some ISP plans use proprietary dialing software tat isn't designed for Netscape 6 or higher. That's what a groups.google search brings up as well:

    (snip)
The browser that opens when an HTML file on your hard drive is clicked is your computer's default browser.

When Netzero connects to the internet it automatically opens the user's home page in Internet Explorer, it doesn't matter what the user's default browser is. After minimizing or closing the IE window any browser can he used for browsing.

Netscape 6/7 isn't compatible with some Netzero features.

    Alice,

I am not concluding the thread by private messages. This is, as I stated an older message that was never picked up. Often, users are not aware that they have private messages.

I believe this thread is concluded.

I'm still wondering how the problem got corrected, though.

Thank you for your Private Message, lbfoto. I'll reply here.

I take it to mean that there was no additional solution, only the information that you already posted in this thread.

Sorry you weren't able to get your ISP's software to open with Netscape 7.
