I am helping a friend's PC. Everytime after shutdown for a few
hrs. and booting up the system will boot to bios cpu frequency.
On the right of the bios setting is an alerter in red stating that
the system had hung on the first boot up and is now in safe mode. Advised to set the proper cpu frequency.

The only lowest selection available is 733mhz which was selected
automatically. There is one option for manual.

System is using WinXp pro using Award bios. Motherboard Asus.

Any suggestions to help me out.

    Shariff,

Thanks for the info on the processor speed.

The situation you describe is normal for a failed boot - the BIOS is looking for confirmation of the CPU speed - in your case the 733 MHz selected automatically is the right one - this is not always the case. Hit F10 - Save and Exit (assume it is the same on your bios) and Save Configuration Changes - Yes. I guess you did this anyway.

This problem is nothing to do with XP - that hasn't started to load at that stage. It is more than likely hardware related.

Power down the computer and switch it off at the mains socket, but leave it plugged in so that everything is earthed.

Check every connection to the m/b, especially the hard drive cables - you could remove and replace each cable connection in turn. Don't touch the processor.

Check that the motherboard is set to jumperless mode - I guess it is - see the m/b manual for this.

What happens if you simply close down the m/c and reboot - do you get the same problem ? or does it only occur when the m/c has been switched off for a few hours - as you posted, and has cooled down.

If this is the case the problem may be temperature related - maybe a dry joint which makes connection after it has warmed up a touch after power on.

I'm really guessing now, but remain fairly convinced that you have a hardware problem with the m/b or HD.

One other thing to do - when the PC is booted up have a look in Device Manager and see if there are any items flagged with a yellow triangle and exclamation or question mark.

    Post back with your results.

PeteC, it seems to have stop. I'll checked out the tips that
you mentioned and ensure that all cables are properly connected.

I have checked Device Manager no yelllow icons next to hardware.
Hopes it stays that way. Thanks for the help.:)
