Is there a way I can transfer all or selected material from my old computer to my new Gateway which only has a only a DVD-RAM/
-R/CDRW and my old has only CD and floppy drive. For example it
has taken me four years in a Hoyle card program to amass like 13 million in credit (of course not actual money) and I hate to loose it among other things like pictures and documents?
This new Gateway was my 70th birthday present from my children.

    Big Foot,

Welcome to the board and happy birthday! If the systems are running the same OS, just put the old drive in the new system. Not sure how it would work if there are two different OS.

    Bigfoot.

Happy 70th - Life begins with XP :D

Have a look at the 'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard' in XP - I believe you can make the transfer via a serial cable.

Otherwise, without a CD-RW in the old m/c the only other option I can see is to zip the files up in WinZip or similar and copy to floppies using the 'span multiple floppies' function of the zipper. Do, say, 14 Megs worth at a time which should fit onto 10 floppies and then re-use them

Who said the floppy was dead

    Pete,

Try Pete's suggestion or go ahead and put the drive in the new system. I had a friend that transferred files from a WIN98 system to a XP system without problems. You'll only have bad copies if it doesn't work.

Yup. XP can read/copy everything ME would have on it. So by far the fastest way would be to connect the drive either just long enough to move files or keep it in there for extra storage space.

If you don't feel comfortable messing with the hardware, any PC shop can do the job for you quickly and it should be cheap. You already have the connectors in your XP PC just waiting for a drive.

Slow down Pete - XP has a program built into it to transfer all the stuff from your old to the new. Its called Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and can be found under system tools - you'll need a network connection or a serial cable to do this.

There's a bit more to moving files, programs and etc than just pulling your old drive out and popping into your new machine - don't get me wrong, that is an option but ............

    ;)

Thanks everyone so far. I will check out possible stores here in Okeechobee for the cable and possible adapter for a file transfer.
Will I get to choose the files to forward? Can I forward an entire program or just files and settings?

    Big Foot,

Yes - you should be able to transfer files of your choice.

I've not used this Wizard, but I think it unlikely that you can transfer complete programs -
