Hi Folks, I use Internet Explorer 6 with Windows 98SE. On a daily basis I get the following message after loading the program.
"Explorer has caused a general protection fault and will close down." At the same time three icons on the task bar disappear.
They are (1) task scheduler (2) norton anti virus (3) sygate firewall. I would be obliged if anyone could enlighten me as to what is going wrong. Many thanks in advance.
    Regards, William.

Hello Brett, Thanks for your reply. I am sorry I cannot remember the exact message. It mentions something about 'user.exe' William.

Without knowing the message, there's not much that can be done! The next time it appears, copy the complete message and paste it into a reply.

williamdp--I do not think there is much you can do to prevent the loss of the icons after the close down message appears. It is probably best to reboot. (Although you could probably get some or all of the icons back by clicking on their executable files, I'll bet you will just get the error message again when you restart IE.).
However, if you can provide the error message as suggested by brett, you may be able to avoid the problem and therefore the shutdown message and subsequent loss of the icons in the future.

Hello Brett and Jim, I may have put my original posting on the wrong board. I found a posting under Windows 98 which described a problen similar to mine. The solution there was to delete *.pwl file and on re-boot Windows would replace it. It appears to have worked. Sorry if I have caused you any bother. Regards, William.

Visit this page, eliminate whatever is found and then run the Repair Tool.

Run SFC and see what that throws up (tho' don't try to fix anything which it finds just as yet).

That is a Windows Operating system error not IE. IE would be IEXPLORE.

And with the words " USER.EXE " involved it may require a re-install of the OS to fix properly and hopefully permanently.

User.exe is built by the OS as it is installed and maintained by same thereafter.

As to the SFC saying SETUPX.DLL is corrupt do not believe it. It may well be of just a different version from the last time SFC was run. If it were actually corrupt you would be having other problems.

Also if SFC is not run and updated after each and every change to the system it LIES BIG TIME.

I found that out the HARD SYSTEM CRASHING WAY.

    OOPS !!

    I missed something.

By losing the Icons in the systray is another indication of an OS problem involving Windows Explorer and/or SYSTRAY.

And when you do lose icons like that it is better to restart Windows to hopefully repair the malfunction.

In fact I have found it better to shut the machine down completely then restart.
