It could be your internet connection settings, or it could be that some IE file(s) are damaged. What do you use to connect - 56K modem, cable, network shared, etc?

Maybe first you should try to repair IE.

Go to 'Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs'

Select 'Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Tools' and click the 'Add/Remove' button then choose 'Repair' from the list of options, follow the instructions from there.

Post back results good or bad

When I click on Properties of the file shdocvw.dll, I'm told I have IE 6.00.2712.300
installed but I get script errors, sometimes can't open certain windows but at other times, IE works fine. My copy also does not show in Add/Remove Programs and the URL you sent the previous person to for repair, seems to be only for an XP OS.

I'm running Win 98 SE. Oh yes, the splash window shows Ver 5.0 plus two `Q' xxxxxx upgrades. I have no idea which security upgrade patch to use.

You might be able to run the IE repair tool from the command line, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start > Run

    2. Type the following (case sensitive) into the Open entry field :

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt "

    3. Click OK

If the repair tool dialog box appears, choose 'Repair Internet Explorer'

    Good Luck.

My apologies for not clarifying that my previous post contained a link concerning the repair of IE6 in Windows XP. Sometimes I forget that I'm not in the XP portion of this BBS.

    In any case, on a Windows 98 System you should be able to access the IE Repair tool by doing the following;

Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. Once the Microsoft System Information window has loaded click on the TOOLS menu and select INTERNET EXPLORER REPAIR TOOL.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Thanks fellows for the feedback.

To `kompiler', I'll give tour instructions a whirl and let you know.

To `Rod', please see my post of Feb 21 in the Damaged IE files thread. Using MSINFO32, i have NO IE repair tool in the Tools menu of the System Info from where I can run and replace if nec, system files and run the Registry Checker.

    Hello kompiler

I gave your instructions vis a vis `run' a try and brought up a 3-part window with the only active line being something about `adding a file'. The second line was Repair Internet Explorer and that was greyed out.

I'm not guessing that I should see if IE can find any more files for itself. I clicked the `add a file' and got a 2-part note that setup files could not be found and that I should open IE and use its`add files'facility [not precise wording]. Under IE `Tools', however, there's only a Windows Update button, nothing about updating IE 6.

By the way, I find setup files in the Internet Explorer folder under Program Files both in the main folder and in a sub-folder called SETUP. The former, however, seems to be only a file called
IE6Setup.exe. Perhaps I DL'd IE a second time and stopped short of trying to run setup and overwriting existing files.

Not sure what I should do now. Oh, I know, I'll scour about for the Registry line I saw re Version and check that. My hunch is that IE 6 is incomplete. It's more than a hunch that I'm now confused. It's reality!

    Hello kompiler,

I said I'd be back but I'm now more confused than ever. Here's where I stand as best I can tell you:

For Internet Explorer I find the following:

Ver. 6.00.2712.308 when I check properties of: SHDOCVW.DLL.

Ver 5.00.2614.3500 when I check the Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Ver 5.00.2614.3500 when I check the SPLASH SCREEN plus two patches, one anti-virus and one a security patch.

    Ver 6.00.2600.0000 when I check IEXPLORE.EXE

As previously stated, there is NO IE 6 in AddRemove Programs [nothing re IE whatsoever]

As previously stated, there is NO Repair Tool in the Tools menu of System Information and there's no repair tool, `only add a file' when I try your suggests `RUN' command: rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

It occurs to me that a listing of the files/folders I show in the Internet Explorer folder might provide some clue:

    Folders:

    1033 11/14/01
    Connect Wizard 11/17/01
    PlugIns 11/17/01
    Setup 11/12/01
    SignUp 11/07/01
    Uninstall Info 11/14/01
    W2k 11/14/01

    Files

    DW15.exe 08/17/01
    Fixi.inf 08/17/01
    Hmmapi.dll 08/17/01
    Ie4.dll 08/17/01
    Ie4regun 01/26/02
    ie6bak.DAT 11/14/01
    ie6back.INI 11/14/01
    ie6setup.exe 01/26/02
    Iedetect.dll 08/17/01
Ieetup.cif 08/18/17 [opens Easy CD Creater but then says latter is not a valid CD image! (a cross link perhaps?) ]
    Iexplore.exe 08/17/01
    License 08/17/01
    Readme 01/31/02
    Support 01/13//02

NOTE: Upper case vs lower case as they appear in the folder

These seem like a weird proliferation of dates. My wife also has Win 98 SE, IE 5.5 and a repair tool therein. Must have practised on my system before setting up hers.

I've read MS support files including (Q164539) [determining version]; (Q181698) Repair Script Errors, Uninstalling IE 6 but all to no avail.

I regret the length of this post but I sure hope you or somebody else can set me on the right path; even better give me a play by play.

    Thank you

    Hi Welt,

    Sorry I haven't replied sooner.

Here's what I got on version checks:

    SHDOCVW.DLL: 6.0.2713.1500

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer:

    6.0.2600.0000

I stopped looking for the other versions since this was enought to tell me you don't have a complete install of IE 6.

Have you tried to reinstall IE6? Because I'm afraid you are going to have to.
    Download it from here

Hopefully it will let you install over your current "broken" installation.

    See how that goes.
