    I am quite sure I am the only PC with the IP address and name and are constantly getting this msg in the Event Log : "A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the machine that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state. "
    Help....

    Just like it says, open a dos window and type in;
    netstat -n
    You have two computers with the same name on the network.

    Well, maybe not. WINS can cause a bunch of problems that are sometimes hard to resolve.

    Read this.

    Which is only one of many problems that WINS and other methods of netbios name resolution may manifest. And that link is only one of a great many that could be made.

    I've seen this problem and applied the service packs, indicated in the KB article linked, on two NT server based networks and the problem was not fixed. On two other NT server based networks, that seem to be configured pretty close to the first two, the problem does not manifest.

    The problem occasionally results in a breakdown of netbios name resolution along with server role problems. The method used to avoid this is restarting the network once a week. This is now routine for those two networks. Occasionally, I fret about it and try looking for the solution again.
