I have a couple of problems I'm hoping someone can help me isolate.

    1) "Hidden" program icons (those on the far right) disappear from my task bar. I know they are still running because I can find them in program manager. How can I get them back or better yet, keep them from dissappearing in the first place?

    2) Every time I check for updates the MS on-line update page tells me I need to install critical update:

818529: June 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

So far I've installed it at least 5 times. How many times do have to install this thing?

    TIA.

    Hi gw1500se

I'm not sure you're talking of windows ME, I see some of your other posts are in the XP area.(some).
Why because with me you cant hide the tray icons unless that particular program has that option .
    do you still use autoupdates?
I turned it off years ago , because back then if i went to windows update on my own and updated anything auto-update didn't know about it yet ..confusing windows can be easy --me to for that matter, even with only one beer :)
If you're unsure about that 818529: June 2003 --check windows update history , check in IE's help about and well like it says here
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;818529
    I checked to

Yes, I'm referring to ME. I do also have XP but that is not a problem at the moment (hardware died).

Specifically, because of a problem with one particular screen resolution setting I have the option set to keep the display options icon on the task bar. That one, going away, is the most annoying because I have to keep drilling into the control panel to change my display settings. The second is the network connection icon. I have to again drill down to the network connections to disconnect when I see it missing. There are others but those are two examples.

As to the auto-update, we may not be talking about the same thing. I am talking about clicking on the "Windows Update" icon on the start menu then going through the brower check for needed updates. I manually select the ones I want. I don't use the feature where the update pops up on the task bar waiting to be installed if that is what you mean. However, each time I check for updates that "critical" update shows up. I don't know why I have to keep installing it.

A right Click on the desktop should allow you to change display settings.

Right ckick on desktop. Select Properties and then the Settings tab.

I know that, that is wha I call drilling down. It is much easier to right click the task bar and select the setting directly, if the darm thing would stay on the task bar.

    Whoa !!! wait a minute.

    From your reply
The way I suggested has nothing to do with the Control Panel.

Unless what appears on the Desktop you call Control Panel. Which it is not.

It is in a way a control panel but it is NOT THE CONTROL PANEL.

Maybe if you tell us what card and model you use, any other symtoms ?

Ive got the option to show settings icon on taslbar(tray it should be called) and with it set can right click as you say to change resolutions quikly ,, But I have no need to use it..

    What problem with what resolutions.
and exclamation marks in device manager ?
when odd things happen to anything on our desktop, or tray, resolutions, first thing I do is scan for viruses and then go get a online scan. maybe check for spyware to.

Our video adapter has some tests we can run --control panel
system ,device manager ----does you'rs and have you used those tests,, maybe youve disabled something of the cards in msconfig ?

We * MAY BE * looking in the wrong place here.

#2 In your original post may well be tied into the problems of disapearing Icons.

#2 May be telling you that you that you have got SYSTEM problems. ( other than video resolutions )

If there is a problem with Windows Explorer.exe ( not Internet Explorer ) or Systray.exe the problems you are having with disapearing Icons is very real.

I've pretty much tied my update problem to IE6 (since it is an IE update in the first place) and am getting some help from that forum.

Since I don't know what it is I have to assume I'm not running TweakUi unless it was installed as part of something else without my knowledge.

However, I do believe there is a relationship between the 2 problems now. I have not done any experimenting yet but I'm pretty sure the icons only go away at some point while I'm running IE6. I also have a problem with IE 6 were it consumes all of my CPU and sometimes never finishes displaying. If I minimize the IE window then restore it the page displays.

I think if I fix my IE 6 problem the others will go away. I've transferred the update problem to theIE6 forum.

    Thanks to all that replied.
