    Hi all,

I've just downloaded Opera 7.11 with Java just to try it out. However, it does not seem to be able to play background *.mid files loaded in webpages.

Does anyone has any idea on how to solve this issue?

    Thanks

Under "Multimedia" in Preferences, is "Enable Embedded Audio" checked?

Can you give an example page?

    What is Java in Opera?

Can I ask a related question? I was going to download Opera and try it out. But the download screen asked me to choose Opera with or without Java. Without Java is a lot quicker to download, especially on dialup. But what's the difference? Does Opera without Java lose functionality? What IS Java anyway? Frankly, I thought it was included in Windows. Thanks for any response.

Many web effects are written in the programming language called "Java ".

There are basically 2 versions kicking around: the version from Sun Microsystems that is the one that is included in Opera's larger download, and a modified version from Microsoft called the "Virtual Machine ".

If you already have Sun's Java installed, you don't need to get it again in the download. But if you don't, you really should get the larger download if you want access to all that many web pages have to offer.

You will find that some sites only will work with one version or the other.

I don't want to get into the legal wrangling that has forced MS to use Sun's Java in the future, but MS Java is not included in XP's basic setup any longer, and you can't download it from Microsoft any longer. But it can be found on the web and Microsoft still offers updates to it once you get it.

So, I think it is a good idea to get both versions.

You can get Sun's current Java Plugin here, supported on Win98 and above:

    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/index.jsp

You can get earlier version here (I'm using 1.4.0_01... some Win95 users find they can't go higher than 1.3.1)

    http://java.sun.com/products/archive/index.html

Mozilla will automatically detect and use the Java Plugin. I'm not sure about Opera. - you MAY need to copy these Javafiles to your
    C:\Program Files\Opera7\Plugins folder

    -NPJava11.dll
    -NPJava12.dll
    -NPJava13.dll
    -NPJava32.dll
    -NPOJI6xx.dll
    -NPJavaxxx_0x.dll
(Above 2 files depend on your Java version)

That's probably the best place to go. There are concerns over the very latest Java. The last version that everybody agrees is okay is 1.4.1_01 b01
Like Moz, Opera simply uses whatever Java is installed on the system. It doesn't need any extra files (aka the old Netscape plugins) for Java to work. In fact, it will simply ignore them.
