    Wake me when it's over...
I installed netscape 7.0 a while back, but after trying it out a while, it was so glacially slow, I went back to my old 4.7, which is no race horse either, at least on my system. I thought I heard of a stripped down version somewhere. Is there one, something that has some getupandgo?
    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi m plumley,

The get up and go is dependent on what you've got under the hood! ;)

If you're running Windows 95, with an older processor, then you will experience Netscape 7 running slower than Grandma's molasses.

    System requirements are:
    Minimum Hardware
    Pentium 233 MHz
    64 MB RAM
    52 MB hard drive space

These are minimum requirements, but inadequate for maximum performance of Netscape 7. Windows 98 and newer, with at least 128 MB RAM, and a newer, faster, Processor, will give you a much improved performance. As an example: I run Windows 98SE, 800Mhz PIII, 384 MB RAM, and Netscape zips right along, even on a dialup connection. My system is certainly not on the cutting edge, where speed is concerned either.

This may not be your problem, but speculation says it sounds like it is...

There are two sites which have streamlined/compact versions of Netscape 7 which you can try:
    SillyDog701 Streamline
    Holger Metzger's Compact

Wife / Kids computer is a 300hz, 128MB memory running w95 with N7.0. Not a speed demon, but acceptable. IE 5.5 is on the same computer, they both run about the same on internet.

    Thanks

Thanks for the info. I figured it was something like that. I think it's a pentium II, 300 Mhz, 32MB ram. How can tell for sure?

    m plumley,

    Go to:
Start | Settings | Control Panel | System

You will find the information on the "General" Tab.

MHO, you will not be happy with Netscape 7.02's performance with only 32 MB RAM. That is considerably below the minimum requirement. If you are, in fact, running Windows 95.

You might want to consider Opera...

    More Ram

I went to Control Panel/System/General (incidently, I'm running Windows 98) and yep,
it said 31MB. So obviously I need to beef up the RAM. It's also running an AMD-K6 3D processor. It doesn't say anything about Pentium II or the MHZ. Does the AMD-K6 mean something along that line?
Thanks too for the other info.

    Hi Mike,

    Re: Pentium and AMD
Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) are the two major manufacturers of processors for PCs. Intel makes the Pentium and Celeron processors; AMD makes the K6 and Athlon processors.

The difference being, that Pentium processors have had the best overall performance. However, the AMD processors are faster than their Pentium counterparts in some tests. In general, you'll pay the most for an Intel processor, which means the AMD processors provide much higher performance in multimedia, and typically have a better price-performance ratio.

Since we know that you are running Windows 98, with a 300 Mhz Processor, increasing your RAM should allow you to run Netscape 7.02 with a good performance.

Check out the Crucial site for the best buys on RAM, if you want to buy online: http://www.crucial.com/
You will need to check with your PC Manufacturer for the type of RAM you will need.

Word of caution on K-Meleon, should you run it along with Netscape 7 . The browser has a bug which trashes Netscape and Mozilla's Personal Toolbar. Be forewarned that this may happen. Supposedly this bug was to have been fixed in K-Meleon's Version 0.7 SP1, but the last report I saw, the bug remains. Holger Metzger has a workaround:

    Hi Romona
Good Heavens, d'you know it's 11:00 at night. I hope your enjoying yourself on this Friday eve. Again, thanks for all the good info. Unless there's some overriding whiz bang feature or speed enhancement in some of the programs you've mentioned, I'll probably stay with Netscape and get some more RAM. I'll let you know how it turns out if you like.
In the meantime, time for a glass of wine...
    Mike
