    Hi all!

I finally got around to installing XP. A damaged car on repair isolated me at home so what the heck ...... I had nothing else to do.
Nothing goes exactly according to plan but it was smooth by anyones standards.

I´ve got everything up and running and am getting into tweak mode.
In another thread, BillyBob told us that he had gone by Black Vipers Safe Settings of the services.

BillyBob and anyone else, did You notice an improvement by those tweaks or is it like blowing smoke up-wind?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

Yes. I did see a slight improvement and less errors in the Event Viewer.

You may have already done this.

But I suggest printing out the Black Viper and then get a good old fashoned Pencil and mark each Item that you changed and how.

I made a couple of mistakes and would have been TOATLY lost without the printout.

One mistake that I made was to kick myself off of the LAN. :(

Changing just one item got me back :)

    Have fun

    Hi BillyBob!

Well, I´ve not printed it but I´ve made a separate copy where all the services which I won´t touch are removed from his paper. Makes it easier to get an overview.

I think that I´ve had all the fun with my computer that I need for one week. Now I´m getting my car back and am going out in the beautiful weather.

After a long weekend of soaring (yes, in gliders) I´ll probably spend an evening or two with the services.

    Have a nice weekend all,
    Christer

Before you do anything, look at Task Manager and see how many sevices you have running and system resource use.

Win XP after installation, by default, has lots of things runnig and using up CPU cycles and memory that you really have no need for.

Watch the resource usage drop in Task manger as you disable unnecessary services and you'll see the benefit to system speed and stability.:)

That my Friend is not exclsive to XP. Or to the OS alone.

98SE & ME are just as bad.

And one of the BIGGEST resource hogs of all is Symantec software.

    Hi Harold,
    thanks for the tips!

I had a quick look at the Task Manager and one question is immediate:

Are really five instances of svchost.exe running or is it one instance with five users having their own memory slot?

I have 32 processes running at present, including IE and OE. I´ll have a closer look next week.

    Regards,
    Christer

    Running Things

    HI BillyBob,

I know that there are many things that I can shut down but I down know what. Can you tell me what I "need" to keep my system running well and use less memory.

    Thanks,

NO !!. I cannot tell you what you need or do not need. I can not see your machine.

You may need things I do not and the other way around.

It is a lot of trial and error work.

Black Viper said I did not need a couple of thngs but I did.

IF you asked about 98SE then I could say YES or NO. But not with XP. Not yet anyway. 7 days is not enough. Give me a couple of Months. It is a whole different ballgame.
