but I cannot for the life of me get them to connect!!! I need instructions for DUMMIES, seriously.

I've tried this so many times, been here and asked but it just doesn't work. :(

Can anyone give me really detailed instructions?? I want to start from scratch.

    I have both named:

    Network: MSHOME

    Laptop: Laptop
    Desktop: PC

IT WONT WORK!!! It's a pain in the butt to email stuff to the other computer just to print stuff!! GRRRRRR

    you know what?

I think it's the way I have these computers set up. I've done these instructions a bizillion times and it just won't work. I use the XP setup CD and it doesn't work.

In the setup it has you pick which way your computers are setup w/a router and internet connection, the one I pick is the one they say isn't recommended, and basically won't work.

I have the laptop and PC going into the router and also the cable modem goes to the router, I believe... Yeah. there isn't another way to do this, I don't think... I have only the 2 computers... GOD, I hate this!!!

Make sure the workgroup is the same--you have done that
You just need two protocols. Make sure each computer is using the same ones only.
Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP
On the properties for TCP/IP use: obtain an address automatically and then go to Advanced and choose Netbios over TCP/IP.
Now go to Network Connections in Control Panel. Click on the advanced tab at the top of the folder and dropdown to advanced settings. Make sure TCP/IP is bound to File and Printer for Microsoft Networks and Cliient for Microsoft Networks
Make sure both computers are set this way. Your router will be the Gateway. Make sure to share some folders . Turn off the XP firewalls.
You will probably have to reboot both computers. Don't use the network wizard. Next time you open Network Places both should show up.
I think the wizard is best used for ICS

Maggie you are a GODDESS!!! Thank you so much!!!! I did it the first time around, now lets just hope that it will work again tomorrow, LOL!!

I am having one problem, no biggie though... I can't seem to get into the PC computer but I can use the printer that is hooked up to it.... But, I can get to the laptop via PC though perfectly.

Thank you so much, again, you are a GODDESS!! :)

You are good at following instructions!

Go into the computer with the printer and rightclick it open properties click on the share tab. That is where you share it. Make it default printer if you have more than one this helps. You shouldn't have to install it on the other computer. I might be wrong about that it has been awhile. mine show up in both computers in Control Panel.

    Hi Maggie!

I have to say that several people have TRIED to tell me how to do this, and I couldn't do it.... and you succeeded on the FIRST try!!! I hope you do this for a living, you gave clear and precise directions, I really appreciate it.

    Thank you!

    Crysti :)

Thanks Chrysti. I'm just a computer user. That might be it though. I don't know all the fancy terms. Most people give way to much information. It took me fifteen deleted network bridges for my wireless before I figured it out. I really needed the network to back up my stuff to an external drive I use. I didn't know where to look to find out why it quit on me.
