    HI. I have Windows Xp home eiditon. My dial up networking is messed up. I want to save my dial up networking user name and password. I open my connection icon. I type in my user name and password and check Save this user name and password for the followring users and then I also click Anyone who uses this computer. Then the password should be saved. Then when I need to connect again when I log on to my computer. The password isn't there and also the user name isn't there. I want that to be there. How do I fix this problem.:)

    Though what you've explained should work you might want to look at the following to see what is set there.

    While you have an open internet connection click on the Tools menu in the open browser window. Select Internet Options, then click on the Connections tab. You should see your Dialup connection listed. Make sure that "Always Dial My Default Connection" is selected. Then click on Settings and make sure that your username and password are listed in the appropriate boxes.

    Now click on Properties and then select the Options tab. Make sure that Prompt for Name, Password, Certificate, etc. is NOT selected.

    Now click on the Security tab and make sure that TYPICAL is selected under Security Options, and that Allow Unsecured Password is displayed in the Validate My Identity as Follows area.

    Now open Outlook Express; Click on Tools, Accounts, and select the Mail Tab. Highlighted your POP3 account if it isn't all ready. Click on Properties, select the Servers tab, and make sure your username and password are entered correctly in the Incoming Mail Server area, and that Remember Password is selected.

    Post back to let us know if any of this helped with your problem.

    I have a similar problem in xp , my dial up icon for my internet ISP puts in the correct userid but the password is wrong, I can tell because there are too many asterics (*) I take out the tick in save the password box and correct the password but next time I try it the save password is ticked again and the password is wrong.
    Ive tried changing it in the internet, tools,connection box but it won't change..Paul

    zan786-
    Rod asked how you are logged in. I have to ask...do you log in at all? Or do you boot directly to the desktop? The reason I ask is that I've seen reports that on some systems the dial connection password does not save unless you are actually logging in (selected user and password) to the machine.

    Paul;

    What you are talking about, having more asterisks in your password, than the actual characters in your password, is a security feature in Windows XP. Microsoft explains that these extra asterisks are added by Windows in an effort to make it harder for someone to crack your password. These extra astericks should have no impact on your saved password.

    To test this; Enter your password, click on Save Password and Connect Automatically, make a connection, discconnect, and then reconnect. The password you entered should be remembered and the connection made with no additional imput from you.

    One thing I have noticed in XP though, is that occassionally my dialup connection, for whatever reason, will forget that I have set it to connect automatically and when I attempt to make a connection, this option is no longer checked, causing me to check it again and then click on connect. A reboot resolves this problem, at least for a while. There have been other threads posted concerning this quirk, leading me to believe that it must be a bug in XP and with any luck Microsoft will come up with a fix for it.

    :)

    Zan786;

    Your problem has been vexing to say the least. I have a couple more questions;

    1. You wrote in one of your posts "I have an icon on my desktop for my dial up connection. My user name isn't saved and my password isn't saved. When I disconnect and then reconnect my user name and password are saved but when i restart my computer then i have to type my user name and password because it isn't saved."

    The question is; Following a reboot what happens if you attempt to make a connection using the Internent Explorer, or Outlook Express Icons instead of the Dial-Up Connection Icon? Do you get the same result?

    2. In response to one of my other questions you wrote "I have one account in Windows Xp. And that account is administaror. "

    The question is; Following a reboot, when you click on the Start button is your user name listed in Logoff? Also when I clicked on the link that you included in your last post I was told that the page was unavailable for viewing. Don't know if theres a problem with geocities or the link itself.

    In any case, I have been able to get my system to mimic yours to some degree by intentionally removing my username and password and then rebooting. So here's something else you might try;

    After making a successful connection, close your internet connection, and reboot your system.

    Once the system has rebooted use the Internet Explorer or Outlook Express Icon to try and make a connection. When the Dialup Connection window opens DO NOT enter your username and password, rather click on the Settings button, which in turn will take you to Internet Properties.

    In Internet Properties you should see your Default Dialup Connection listed. If the box "Always Dial My Default Connection" is not checked, check it. On the right side of this window you will see three buttons, Add, Remove & Settings. Click on "Settings" which will take you to your ISP Internet Settings.

    Is your username and password listed in the Dialup Settings at the bottom of the page? Most likely they will not be. Also, if you are using a standard dialup connection none of the other options on the page need to be checked. Tab down to Dialup Settings and enter your Username and Password, click on OK, which will return you to Internet Properties, click OK on this page as well, which will take you back to your Dialup Connection, which should now contain your Username and Password. If they aren't already checked place checkmarks in front of "Save Password" and Connect Automatically, then click the Connect button and allow a connection to be made.

    Once a successful connection has been made, disconnect, reboot and attempt to make a connection again. Are your username and password there now?

    Sorry what I've suggested didn't work. I guess I'm at a loss. What you've done should have fixed the problem. Sorry we couldn't resolve it. Maybe someone else out there has some other suggestions.

    zan;

    Didn't mention who your ISP was.

    If it's AOL and you upgraded to XP AFTER AOL was installed this will apply.
    For programs to use dial up you HAVE to reinstall AOL ver 7.0 (gotta be using that ver).
    It's that simple. It's an AOL thingy.

    Pick up a free aol cd at blockbuster, barnes n noble or dowload it.
    Dial up programs use IE. AOL configures it. If set up right the following will happen.

    All entries in the connection tab (under properties) of IE will be grayed out and blank.
    If you goto Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on America Online > Select properties.
    Do a double take n go huh? Absolutely nothing happens.

    Hope that helped
