My family has two PC's both with XP. One does not have any problems with auto updates, the other has an install problem. It refuses to install Q817287 and also a non essential update 814995.
I read the threads about this issue but the solutions did not work.
Looking to the Edb.log I see a difference between the two PC's. The one installing correct has only one Edb.log (128kb) the other has 49!!!!! Edb.log files all 128kb.
    Two questions:
    1. Why is it multiplying?
    2. Can I delete 48 of them?:

This behavior may occur if the Edb.log file is damaged. The Edb.log file is referenced by the security update Setup program during its installation. If the Edb.log file is damaged, the update may not install correctly.

Follow the instructions here on deleting the Catroot2 folder.

In the mean time I solved the problem by changing the cotroon2 in old catroon2. After that the system did built up a new catroon2 itself. Then I manually loaded all the updates and by accident to day I had the first auto update which worked as advertized.

But anyway thanks for your response.
