I use Win98SE and I installed a Pioneer DVD-120 read-only ATAPI drive in a Compaq Deskpro EP system with a P3 450MHz. The drive's firmware revision is 1.21, and the driver controlling it is Microsoft standard disk driver dated 4-23-99.

And here are the results I get.

    1. Regular boot
Music CDs play for about 15 minutes, then the system locks up requiring a power cycle. All data CDs and DVDs are unusable, resulting in an instant BSOD. Absolutely no data CD or DVD, commercially-made or home-burned, can be used in any way whatsoever.

    2. Regular boot, but with 32-bit disk drivers disabled
Music CDs and all data CDs work. DVDs cause a lockup requiring a power cycle.

    3. Regular boot, but with real mode drivers for the DVD drive
Music CDs and data CDs work. PowerDVD refuses to work so DVDs are untestable -- except that I can still do a DIR on the command line and find files on a movie DVD.

    4. Safe mode
    Same as #3 above.

    5. Command prompt only mode
Music CDs not tried. Data CDs work. Power DVD unusable, but I can still find files on a movie DVD.

In all instances, enabling or disabling DMA for the drive made no difference.

    Tech support calls:
    1. Pioneer blames Microsoft.
    2. Microsoft blames Pioneer and Compaq.
    3. Compaq I'm having trouble contacting.
Of course with Pioneer and Microsoft pointing the finger at each other, nothing will ever be done.

The DVD drive replaced an Acer (now BenQ) 56X CD-ROM ATAPI drive which worked perfectly.

    IDE and ATAPI devices:
    1M: WD hard drive
    1S: WD hard drive
2M: DVD drive (formerly CD drive)
    2S: nothing

    True SCSI devices:
    0: nothing
    1: nothing
    2: nothing
    3: nothing
    4: Sony CDU-76S CD-ROM drive
    5: nothing
    6: Sony CRX-145S CD-RW drive
    7: Adaptec AHA-2940U

    Pseudo-SCSI devices:
    HP parallel port scanner

    Installed cards:
    Matrox Millenium G200 (AGP)
    SMC 1211 NIC (PCI)
    USB2 (PCI)
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 DE (PCI)
    Adaptec AHA-2940U SCSI (PCI)

The Win98 Device Manager shows no conflicts.

Now then, what can be done to fix this problem?

A bit of a longshot here but,

Maybe try an 80 wire IDE connector cable. DMA mode should be enabled in Windoze.

    Dale
