Windows Protection Error after WINDOWS 98 installation

After re-formating the hard drive, I re-loaded the windows 98 software using the startup disk and Windows 98 CD-ROM.
The Windows 98 software installation almost completes, it goes through all the install steps okay, but near the very end of the installation the screen goes to the DOS prompt and displays the following message:

Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
C:\WINDOWS\system\vmm32.vxd:Missing/unable to load.

If I try and restart the computer at this point it comes up into DOS aith the A:\ prompt.

Any suggestions?

Turn off anti-virus, aka "Trend ChipAway" in BIOS.

Every BIOS can be slightly different.
First you usually hit DEL as the system just starts up to get into BIOS. It should be on the Advanced Chipset options page, but yours may be different. Check the manual.

 

One of the causes of this error is having the CD drive as the first bootable drive.
Try changing that also.
(independently of Jim's suggestion, otherwise we won't know which was the actual solution)

 

Thanks to Jim and WhitPhil, the problem has been fixed, unfortunately, like my many other experiences with computers I'm not sure why or how. I didn't get into the BIOS but I did play around with the setup files a bit.

I just had this problem today on a friens computer, found the problem in device manager, look for yellow question marks, he had the wrong location and driver for the modem.

Fixed it. . . . . .
