They both are very much a lot of trial and error.

And it is very hard to even sugggest anything untill we know what kind of a system & what OS. Which Video card we would be dealing with etc.

But the Video may require installing. Un-installng and re-installing vaious sets of drivers untill you find the ones that works.

I had to try four different sets of Video drivers befora I found a stable one. And wound up with one two generations old.

But as with any OS you will get ideas from both side of the fence.

But I do know that 98 SE can be VERY stable.

BTW. If you do go for a version of Windows I would suggest either 98 SE or XP. the Original 98 requires a LOT of upgrading. Which is already built into SE.

Well, I'm finding more problems now.
I have 3-d snooker sim game Virtual Snooker. After running this game, the dispay shifts to the left by about 2 cm. If I adjust the display, it's 2 cm to the right after the next re-boot.
I am also getting abortive booting behaviour. Once the splash screeen loads, the busy cursor is showing, and the whole machine hangs. Nothing responds - hard re-boot needed (scandisk during next boot).

Any suggestions? The video card is an ATI Rage pro and my system specs are in my first post. My mobo is a Gigabyte GA71xe, by the way.

Now that this thread has become 98 specific, moving it there.

You are wise beyond your years but maybe Win98se is a little beyond your grasp at this point in time. And, since its such a big cumbersome over-rated operated system that offers nothing compared with what you are accustomed to - why stick with it? I'm surprised you haven't already trashed that machine. QNX sounds like the operating system you need to be experimenting with.

Regardless - different strokes for different folks. You like Linux, I like Windows. And, I just read that somebody is running Win98 on a 16mb SansDisk. Do you think that was Codeman?

    ;)

When you installed Windows 98 on your machine. Did you install the motherboard drivers as the first thing? This can be a cause of blue screens right off the bat.

markp62 - yes, I went to the Gigabyte site first and got the via 4 in 1 etc. (this is a weird concept for me, too - Linux automatically installs all the drivers needed for the mobo to just work, straight off) Thanks, though.

Rockster2U - you may well be right. I am used to an OS just working, no fiddling, no reinstalling drivers to get it stable, no hard reboots. I think my experiment with Win 98SE is nearing its end.

Hee hee! Rockster you says thins so good.

I agree with Arie, I think Carly is just trolling.

So in closing this thread for my self, final thoughts.

Since windows is so bad and your former is so perfect, just forget windows.

Just a little research will show just how perfect. Would you believe that some very stupid people run this OS.

The reason I say stupid is they report all kinds of problems from lockups, no driver availability, and even software availability.

And get this some of them actually want to run some windows programs and it will not work! Can you believe that? Why would they want to do that? Geez! They have all these problems when you have only perfection!!! So it has to be these stupid people.

Why don't you go into business and start supplying corporate America with new "Wonder Workstations ". Replace the win98 with your OS and then just reinstall all the apps they want and use like Office Xp etc.

Here are some good places that might help
