I myself have always had better luck by letting Windows installe the Monitor as a Default Plug N Play.

I wouldn't use that Compaq software unless you have a Compaq. Those guys are pretty proprietary.

If you only have the problem with one card, it's probably the card.

Everything nice and free-flowing in there? Those cards will often just shut down when they get hot.

my monitor is a compaq v75 only before installing updated driver i have contacted compaq to see if it is compatible with mine as mine is model 624t and is not listedd on that page.

this problem has not occured with the geforce 2 mx400
only with the geforce 4 mx440 (with heatsink not fan)
i changed the first geforce 4 mx440 for another and the problem remains

i do have an ethernet card next to graphics card but its so small it couldnt possibly hinder cooling of graphics card

Ok here goes attempt number Umpteeenth :)

went through written instruction (in text read me file) and got to a point where microsoft came back at me with "driver not digitally signed" in the beleif that this driver is written more recently than microsoft wrote xp pro i continued to proceed next came "continue anyway" so i did.
now all that remains is a little time and usage to see if my monitor goes down again.

i could'nt have acheived this without the help and prompting i got aff abraxas and billybob, if i could skywrite this i would, i think without this sort of community there would be an awful lot of leeches out there preying on pc users with a little difficulty making a lot of fast bucks.

    cheers guy's i owe you a beer :)

will come back with a progress report as soon as poss,

now i must do that other thing... EAT :)

Thank you and hope thing work out better.

I also never pay any attention to the message that says Not signed.

But I would like you to clear something up please.

You mention the GeForce4 MX 440 and say it has no fan.

My 440 does have a fan. But I also believe there is more than one model of the 440.

But the link you pointed to shows a 420 and looks like it does not have a fan.

propellerheads (uk support for sparkle, com) suggested...

Try with just one stick of memory and if pc100, set cpu clock to 100, disconnect unneccessary hardware and turn off power-saving features before retrying

    my reply before attempting was...

    firstly i have pc133 memory
second i dont know how to set the clock to 100 ?
and finally can you confirm whether i ought to try
driver 30.82 whql as driver 28.32 whql did'nt fix my problem.
P.S. i am at present running my old card...
Geforce 2 mx400 64mb at 32bit resolution 1024x768 refresh ate at 75 hertz no problem.

which brings me to another question, why one stick of ram, change clock speed, disconnect hardware and turn off power saving when surely an improved card should work better???

my card is without any doubt a...

    Geforce4 mx440 sp7100 64mb ddr ram with a heatsink.

am now going to bed... because im completely stuffed :(

    end of monitor prob,

    finally figured it out...
billybob started me thinking about whether i should have a fan or not, so i went to sparkle.com and looked at all the cards they had and noticedd some have fans some dont, so on second looking i noticed as billybob rightly said "I SHOULD HAVE A FAN "
took card back to shop, and got my money back, dont you hate it when you go in a shop and the "TECH" guys say "yeah thats the one you want, no problem" there is no room between the card and my ethernet card + a fan :)
thanks for all your help guys, i kinda enjoyed the testing time, even though at times it was tiring.

    till the next time :)

    That is a good point.

I had to move some cards around in order to ge the GeForce4 MX 440 installed at all.

The heatsink/fan is almost 1/2 inch thick.

Plus it is best that there be at least one empty slot between the Video card and the next one fan or no fan.

That would not be be my choice of words. Or there would be a lot of ****** in the reply.

BTW. Does sparkle.com require a membeship ?. I could not get there ? I tried to so I could maybe give you more help.

The randomness of the problem made it look like heat.

You may even want to consider putting a case fan in. A little extra noise, maybe, but the whirr comforts me after having several problems in the past that boiled down to heat.

And keep an eye on that little fan. Dust can slow or stall them.
