have upgraded my graphics card to...
    geforce 4 mx44se + tv, 250MHz, 64mb fast ddr memory speed 333mhz

only to find it periodically shuts down the monitor (green on/off button changes to amber) p.c. stays on

    HEEEEEEEEEEEELP :(

i though it might have been something to do with power options, but have reset them, only to find it still does it.

Could be the monitor itself. Try swapping monitors with somebody for a while and see what happens.
Probably won't help, but try removing and reinstalling the (latest) drivers for both the card and the monitor.

Just got that card myself, only a 128. No idea what can be causing the shutdown, but if you had a PCI video card before, you may want to be sure BIOS specifies AGP as primary display now. Look for power-down options while you're there.

The XP driver for that card is here:
    http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_44.03

44.10 is available on some sites (Dell, E.G.) but has not been officially released by NVidia and I lost some display resolution options with it. Stick with 44.03.

Be sure the fan on the card is unobstructed, even if that means moving any nearby PCI cards. And be sure the fan is actually turning. Those small fans get blocked easily.

Abraxas... your a GOD... I bow before thee, for all that is great is within you, and I QUESTIONED YOU

That link (the one i questioned) sorted out the problem with my monitor, But also I checked the driver supplied with my audigy 5.1 card...
I removed it then downloaded and installed off their site, the shop supplied the wrong one ?!?, so watch out, this mere mortal is on your tail :D

    Seriously though... MANY THANKS :)

Glad things are going well. So you didn't need the new speaker system or are you glad you got it anyway?

    P.S.

before i go is there a way of automating spybot to continually monitor system while online especially while downloading (especially as Kazaalite was the culprit for my contracting the icqbot worm that caused me to reinstall xppro) or a program that continually monitors, i run AVG (free version) but it didnt detect the icqbot, does avg catch spyware, is spyware a virus???

    G'night :)

Worms are considered viruses, but trojans are considered spyware and spyware is not a virus, though some trojans are considered viruses. OK? Point is, you really need something else besides AV to watch out for those pests.

Anyway, Ad-Aware has the Ad-Watch add-on that watches your connection for you, and SpyWareGuard Control Panel (free and free updates) has popped up to warn me about a few things:

    http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

SpyWareBlaster can help prevent browser hijacks and unpleasant ActiveX controls without interfering with the good guys:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
Just out of habit, I never use the driver CD's that come with new hardware (and look for updates to the other software, too). I always go to the net and look for new drivers. Too many bad experiences with old CD's and substandard drivers from 1999 for that shiny, new hardware. Sometimes I find good software on those CD's a few months later when I get around to checking them out, though I wouldn't have given Nero much hope of being a viable company still if I had to judge from that early version they gave me with a CD-RW. The room glowed blue more often than any other color, and I had a half dozen coasters on every table ;)

(PS. Just put in a DVD, too. We seem to be evolving on a kind of parallel. No problems at all. XP recognized it and no drivers or software were needed.)

all fixed Uh Oh = (

last night i went out and left pc on for about 4 hours, when i came back and moved mouse, green light and screen came back on, which is why i beleived the problem was sorted.

this morning (decided on day off) i started using pc and 2/3 minutes into use ithe monitor shut down again, here we go...

i have taken the geforce 4 mx440 se 64 mb ddr back and changed it for another, only the problem is still there, so now i have put back my old geforce 2 mx400 to see if the monitor still shuts down.

if it does then i assume its new monitor time, if it doesnt then all i can think is the difference between the two cards, and they are...

geforce 4 mx 440 heatsink (not fan) + DDR ram
geforce 2 mx400 fan (not heatsink) + not DDR ram could it be a conflict between my m/board using pc133 ram and DDR ram on graphics card??? :(

    No. No interaction between memories.

But check BIOS settings, especially if you used to have shared memory on that machine. (Don't have time right now to check out the board.)

You might check out mattman's idea, too.

    Run: devmgmt.msc

Check under "Monitors ". You'll probably see up to 6 listings since that card supports multiple monitors. One should be different from the others and should be a default plug and play or the actual name of the one you are using. Right-click and update it.

Check the refresh rate under Display Settings. If it is set at 60, try a higher one, or set it to the monitor's default.

Could be the monitor, of course.

    Billybob... have just reset to
    always on... never,never,never. :)
    it was on
    always on... 45 mins, never,never,never.

and found on monitor power saver option was on, changed to off.

    Abraxas...

i run devmgmt.msc there is just the one plug and play monitor.
and i always set to 75mhz refresh.

am now gonna check bios for shared memory.

will call in again later to let you know what happens.

though i cant help thinking because this problem is of an intermittent nature, it might actually be the monitor :(

    now trying the latest suggestion...
    reduce screen resolution to 800 x 600 32 bit
to see if it stays on, if it does then my monitor cant accept
    1024 x 768

i always thought the higher the resolution you select,
    video playback would be better?

or should i set up desktop at 800 x 600 and divx, media player and dvd player to max res???

    HMMmmmmmonitor

well i have tried the latest suggestion of reducing screen res, only to find i still have the problem.
but im not convinced its the monitor because these problems dont occur on the geforce 2 mx 400.
only on the geforce 4 mx440?

I do not recall if it was mentioned or not but did you install any required Motherboard drivers ?

Is AGP ( if that is what you are using ) set properly in the BIOS ?

I have the AGP GeForce4 MX 440 using the defalut MS/XP drivers and no problems.

I did have problems with the card at first in SE until I found that I needed to run drivers two versions back in order for the video to be complatable with ALL programs.

    my bios shows...
power management setup/power management APM/ACPI everything else disabled.
primary graphics is set on PCI only other option is onboard AGP.
i have just checked in with the uk support site for sparkle.com (propellerheadsupport.co.uk) and they suggested the following...

Try with just one stick of memory (256)
and if pc100, set cpu clock to 100, (Ihave pc133)
disconnect unneccessary hardware and turn off power-saving features before retrying

this all seems a little extreme and i am not sure about how to set cpu clock (nor do i want to, nor should i have to tinker about like this?????) to 100
in theory this graphics card should run on my monitor should'nt it.
how can i check my monitor integrity ?
there must be some software that will test monitor for its ability/compatibility with this kind of graphic card.
