Domain name

I want to establish a domain name for business use. I'm not at all familiar with getting a domain name and have some questions. I'm not going to be hosting a website right at first. I will be sending some rather large files. What do I look for when I register a domain name? I did a search and came up with tons of choices of companies but don't know what I should look for in the way of what they offer. Can anyone enlighten me? I sure will appreciate it!
