My neighbor is still running Win 95B and has the Installation CD for it. Can he purchase XP UPGRADE version to make a clean install of XP or does he HAVE TO purchase the FULL VERSION?

The upgrade version will do just fine for a clean install.

As I recall there are 2 options here - insert the upgrade CD into the PC and select new installation as opposed to upgrade. The Win 98 CD should not be required - but HD will be formatted, so data back up essential.

    Or

Check in the BIOS to make sure that 'Boot from CD' is the first boot option (followed by Floppy and HD, in that order).

Format the drive, boot from the upgrade Cd. At some point along the line Win will ask for the 98 CD to be inserted - as evidence that you are entitled to the upgrade.

Both the upgrade and full versions are identical except for that the upgrade checks for a previous version, either on the HD or via the previous version installation CD.

    Whoa!!!!

Windows 95 does NOT qualify for an 'upgrade' to Win XP. See info HERE . Hope you got this in time.

I wonder if Microsoft is saying that to make you purchase the full version. When Win 98 and ME came out. Some people didn't know they could use their old versions of windows as PROOF of ownership of a previous version of windows and simply get the UPGRADE version of Win 98 as opposed to buying the FULL VERSION. Many people spent the extra money on the FULL VERSION.

NOTE: If anyone has used a Win 95 CD as proof of ownership of a pervious version of windows to do a CLEAN install from a Win XP UPGRADE CD, please let us know for sure if it works.

    Just a little more info...

No, this appears to be part of M$'s new 'licensing game'. Win95 is basically considered "dead" according to the 'Product Life-cycle'. Win98 is not far behind. I believe the new version of M$ Office that is due out later this year, is not even compatible with Win98. The message here seems to be... "upgrade or die" :D

That message is not only coming for MS but software and hardware venders also.

And that is main reason that I upgraded to XP on this machine.

It sure was not because 98SE was not doing all that I asked of it. And doing it with no hassle.
